Women on: Prison Break, Supernatural, Smallville

I was impressed with the women on Prison Break last year. There were five intriguing, reoccuring female characters. One of those characters is now dead, we haven't seen two of them yet at all, and one got dismissed as the 'scorned woman' sort. Which means that we currently have one interesting female character. Ouch.

Debra Jean was... okay, but not a deep character and not terribly bright. The woman in this most recent episode was kinda ooky (my roommate and I were joking about how she'd turn out to be the female T-Bag and try to molest/kill him). Right now, it feels like they blew their 'strong female character' wad on season one and now they've got nothing.

*sigh*

I hope I'm wrong about that.

In retrospect, I'm more pleased with S1 of Supernatural now that I realize that, like everything else (writing, emotional intensity), the one-shot female characters of the show got better as the season went on. And I loved their Reaper tonight. Dean was wonderful with her when he thought she was a real woman, and heart-breaking after he realized the truth.

I wasn't expecting to be so pleased by Smallville's female characters, mostly because when I think about the show, I remember the really creepy commentary that the producers (?) did where they were drooling over KK (Lana Lang) in a really really disturbingly stalkerish way.

But I was very pleased with the strength of the women in this episode -- Lana kicked ass, Martha was tough, Chloe was brave as hell, Lois was firm-willed in not letting Clark dismiss what she saw as a hallucination, and one-shot character Raya was amazing. Very strong showing. They have four strong female regulars, which is really nice to see (it's also neat to see how strongly Clark is being shaped by the women in his life).
