Ewan McGregor and Writers and Love

So, I have two Ewan McGregor movies rattling about in my head, longing to be compared. They are, of course, Moulin Rouge and Young Adam.
Cut for spoilers for both movies )

I've been hearing a lot about 'Young Adam' recently, and having read your comparison, I'm tempted to go watch it. (It's so strange, at one stage of my life I would never have let an Ewan McGregor film pass me by!)

I'd definitely recommend it -- it's a very good movie. Very bleak and a bit graphic, but incredibly well done. The acting is, of course, superb, but the film is beautiful -- washed out colors and mists. The story's quite interesting (though, again, very bleak -- it's described as an 'amoral morality tale') and the editing is very good.

I hired it last night. I agree, very bleak, and so fascinating to see a morally ambiguous character in the central role.

Joe was a really interesting character -- I can definitely see why Ewan was keen to play him, he's really nothing like what Ewan's been doing recently.

It's a role I would consider 'traditional Ewan'. (The ridiculous thing is, I prefer him in his more spectacular/leading man type roles such as "Moulin Rouge"!) It makes me wonder why we're fans of certain people. Their looks? Their charm? The factor that one can't quite quantify?

I often wonder that myself. I mean, I'd like to say it's his talent, but it isn't just that I know it. The movie that made me fall for him was Moulin Rouge, so I think, for me, the tipping point was "OMG! He can sing!" which is such a huge bonus in my book. And not only could he sing, but somehow, he managed to instill the wide-eyed earnestness of all the musicals that I've ever loved into Christian. He had a Gene Kelly quality that appealed to me. And since then, I've seen his quite enormous range and I do know that that has impressed me.

He's also just... likable. Even in roles like Young Adam, I can't bring myself to root against him.

Plus, he's quite gorgeous, in a very down-to-earth, very human way. All those things put together, I should think.
