Dream

Last night I found myself lying alone on a grassy plain. The sun, which was shining brightly, had woken me up. I knew I was in a dream. I lifted up my head and looked around. squinting against the sun, I saw someone coming towards me. An Indian. I put my head back down and waited. What’s going to happen now? I thought. I was a little afraid, but too curious to make myself wake up from the dream. I watched his barefeet moving closer and closer until he was standing right infront of me. My heart beat faster against the dry ground. The Indian spoke. To me, or to someone else, or to himself. I couldn’t tell. His words, which I didn’t understand, sounded neither hostile nor friendly. He stooped down, and before I knew what was happening, he had scooped me up and was carrying me off. Everything seemed so real I almost forgot it was just a dream. I could practically feel the sweat on his back when I put my arms around his neck, and count every step across the vast prairie. I didn’t know whether to feel relieved that - whatever trial had left me lying on the ground, helpless - was over now, or afraid that I was being carried to a worser fate. Was this my rescue, or the beginning of unforeseeable suffering? Everything about the situations was completely ambiguous. …kind of like my life at the moment. I can’t make sense of what’s behind me, and I don’t know what’s ahead.

I might as well try to trust the one who carries me.

dreams, god
