I didn't mean to say anything bad about Phillip Seymour Hoffman--at all! He's a really, really stellar actor, though I'm sure I haven't seen as many of his movies as you have. It's just that in "Almost Famous", between his performance and a great script (and I'm assuming the actual Lester Bangs's personality, as he mentored Crowe early on), it just makes the movie for me in a lot of ways--which is a feat, because I'd say the movie is hard to unmake. All that he says about music and coolness just sounds like poetry to me. Though it might just be me being crazy.
As for Rotten Tomatoes, I'd say it and IMDb have very different functions. Tomatoes is good if I'm interested in how good a movie from the five or ten years is, and to find critical reviews of them. IMDb is better for older movies and trivia and discussions, I feel.
I...actually saw part of Alex and Emma, while I was working at the movie theatre and my brother asked me to take him and his girl-du-jour so they could get in for free. We all left after about 15 minutes--I went to Finding Nemo, they went to whatever Matrix was out, which I really don't think could have been much better. But yeah. I don't remember anything about what I saw.
