The College Trip

So here's a rundown on our (me, Mom, Alden and Calvin (my brothers) and Chris (my cousin)) colleging exploits:

Tuesday: Left around 9, we go up to Bradley Airport (near Hartford) to pick up caravan. This caravan has a side door that opens automatically if you press a button on the inside, which amuses Chris and Calvin greatly throughout the trip. From there we drive to Pittsburgh. One thing about living in Connecticut is that it is small, so, at least for me, you woefully underestimate distances. I look at a map of the country and say, "Penn? That’s not that big". But it is. It really is. Driving across Penn takes about eight hours. During that time, Calvin and Chris come up with a Wormhole Theory. In layman’s terms, the theory states that the tub of Sour Brite Crawlers that Chris brought with him can only be opened once an hour at 17 minutes past, and when the wormhole is open each person can have at most one worm. The thing about this rule is that no less then four times they look at the clock literally at something:18 or something:19. I am quickly banned from having the worms as I obviously enjoy it when they realize the time just after the wormhole has closed.

Once in Pittsburgh, we check into our hotel and went to a restaurant. We were served by the coolest waiter ever. His name was--I shit you not--Basilio, he was from Panama, he called mom "Pretty lady", and he brought us an entire pitcher of milk with our glasses.

Wednesday: We go to Carnegie Mellon. It's a good school, but you can't branch out if you are a theatre major, and you can't do theatre if you're not. Not for me.

On the way into Ohio, Calvin and Chris buy fireworks, obviously the only reason they agreed to come. Apparently, it is legal for one to buy fireworks in Ohio, but not to light them. Residents have 48 hours to take them out of state; non-residents have 72. The guy there says that in Pennsylvania it is illegal for residents to buy fireworks, but it is legal for non-residents. Odd...

Thursday: In the morning we go to Denison. Denison is a good school, but, somehow, I just don't feel it.

In the afternoon we go to Kenyon. I like Kenyon. The campus is really nice, and the guy who interviews me is really cool. He asks interesting questions and makes me feel Kenyon is the type of community I need.

Friday: In the morning: Ohio Wesleyan. It apparently is Ohio Wesleyan day; they have tours running every 10 minutes and speakers at lunch. It seems nice, but not challenging enough and not a good enough theatre program. We duck out early.

From there we got to Oberlin, which was the whole point of the trip. Oberlin seems exceptional from what I have read. The guy doing the info session is pretty dull, but the part of the campus I saw was nice, and I was interviewed in the park as all the offices were full, which was a nice touch.

Friday: We check out the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. It's okay, but I expected more. Like, there was a video on music videos, which I thought would talk about music videos; instead, it had clips of some of the best music videos of all time; sound bites that just made me angry because, you know, I was watching that. It would be better if they had screens which played the best music videos or where you could pick which ones to watch: "Loosing my Religion", "Sledgehammer", "Every Breath You Take", "Take on Me", etc.

From there, it was a simple 10-hour trip through Buffalo, Albany, Springfield, and back home listening to "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban".

For all of you thrown by all that dull college talk, here are some quotes:

"When I sleep, I often imagine I'm the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal."--Calvin

"Would you like American cheese on your hamburger?"--Basilio
"Is that all you have?"--Calvin
"Yes. God bless America."--Basilio

"If I bop one on the head, can I take him home?"--Chris RE: pigeons

"Looks like someone didn't make way for ducklings."--Alden RE: road kill

"Snap"--Mom
"Did your mom just say snap?"--Chris

"Who's Jimi Hendrix?"--Some random ten-year-old at the Hall of Fame
