http://panpancrafts.blogspot.com/2012/06/tutorial-simple-crochet-striped-hooded.html This jacket is fitted for a newborn, other sizes and their measurements are given during the tutorial in parantheses, sorted by age: 6, 12 and 18 months). I didn´t crochet a gauge, to be honest, I never did for anything before, but it worked quite well without one.
You´ll need:
Wool: I used acrylic wool, 100g (appr. 3,5 oz) / 241m (appr. 2,6 yd), for size 6 months appr. 128g/4,5 oz, 12 months 135g/ 4,75 oz and for 18 months 142g/ 5 oz)
For a striped jacket use half the weight for each color
Crochet hooks: 4mm ( Brit: 8/ US: F) 4,5 mm (Brit:7 /US: G)
4 buttons (more accordingly to bigger sizes)
sewing needle
thread
tapestry needle
Scissors
Stitches used: Chain (CH), single crochet (SC), half-double crochet (HDC), double Crochet (DC), increase (inc.),
1. Back (G hook):
Row 1:
CH 29 (32, 35, 38), SC in 2nd ch from hook, SC whole row, = 28 (31, 34, 37) sc, turn
Row 2+3:
CH 3, DC whole row, turn, CH 3, DC whole row
Row 4+5:
Change Color:
Take your 2nd color and pull the yarn through the remained stitch on your hook. Pull the old colored stitch tight, CH 3 whith crocheting the 1st color yarn into that chain (a good tutorial for changing color you can find
here), DC the whole row, turn, CH 3, DC whole row, change color again.
Repeat steps for rows 2 to 5 untill your work is about 7,5"/ 19 cm (9,5"/ 24cm; 10"/25,5cm; 11"/28cm)
add one row DC of 1st color, fasten off.
2. Fronts (2 pieces/ use G hook):
CH 14 (16, 18,20), work same as back until 3 rows less than back to top. For shaping the neck turn work, CH 3, skip next 2 stitches, DC in 4th stitch, DC whole row, torn, CH 3, DC whole row, turn, change to 1st color, CH 3, DC whole row, fasten off
3. Sleeves (2 pieces, use F hook)
CH 20 (23,26,29), work same as back over 3 rows,
Row4:
shaping sides by inc. 1 st each end, then every left side row (the one, that brings you back to your color change), too, until there are 31 (33,36,39) stitches, work even until sleeve is 6"/15cm (7"/17cm, 7,5"/19cm/8"/21cm), fasten off.
4. Hood (use G hook):
CH 53 (56, 59, 62), work same as back until hood is 6"/15cm (7"/17cm, 7,5"/19cm/8"/21cm), fasten off.
Shaping the hood:
with right sides facing, join yarn at beginn ch edge of hood, where the color changes are visible CH 1, SC whole row to crochet the sides together, turn and SC whole row back, fasten off.
5. Join pieces:
There are 2 ways to join the pieces together: one can SC a single row to join two pieces (pieces turned left), that´s what I did, or one can sew them together using a tapestry needle. For both ways one schould follow these steps: first crochet/sew togehter the shoulderparts, 2nd fix the sleeves to the sleeve holes of front and back, 3rd, in one big row sew/crochet together the ides and the downside of the sleeves. At last sew/crochet the hood onto neck and back.
6. Button band and buttonhole band:
Button band:
Starting at the lower edge of one front (most used: left for Girls, right for Boys, but I don´t bother) HDC one row up to the hood´s edge, turn, CH 2 HDC the whole row back, fasten off.
Buttonhole band:
Starting at the lowe edge of the other front side HDC one row up to the hood´s edge, turn, CH1, SC until you reach the 1st color change, depending on how big your buttons are CH 3 or 4, skip one st, SC till the change of color repeats (for my jacket for example, all buttonholes are on the grey stripes) and repeat the steps for 3 more buttonholes. For bigger sizes measure or eye-measure where your buttonholse should be and how many you want to have. End row with SC, Turn and CH 2, HDC row back, in every buttonhole HDC only 1, you should end on the hood´s edge again, fasten off.

Repeat pattern until 5 (6,6,7) st. remain for heel. Place all heel st. onto the same needle.
For sole: you should have 10 (11.12,13) st. on needle. K0 (1,0,1)st. K2tog for rest of row. 5(6,6,7)st. total.
Explanation: This can be kind of confusing. Basically, when you are knitting the stitches for the sole you knit the last stitch together with one from the side. Then you turn and knit the other side, and SSK (or you can k2tog - I just like the look of SSK better) the last st. with a st. from the other side. You work this way down the sole until you’ve used up all the side stitches - until 5 (6,6,7) total remain for the edges, then k2tog to finish off the 10 (11,12,13). Flip work to inside and complete with 3 needle BO. Fold over cuff and tuck in yarn. Finished!
