Wow, i loved this. The ending was so terribly sad but with just a glimmer of hope. The whole thing is very bittersweet and believable for them.

and the title just sums them up oh so well.

And yes, that part in the song always makes me think of them. What's more, I think they are aware of what they are losing, but finding their task too important, and that's lovely, and terribly bittersweet.
