Meme Day 2

Sep 24, 2009 19:34

the 7 days meme:
Day one • a picture
Day two • a song
Day three • a book
Day four • a site
Day five • a youtube clip
Day six • a quote
Day seven • whatever tickles your fancy

Day two • a song
I thought a lot about what song to share. I love music and sharing music but whether it's Song of the Month or a shuffle meme or whatever I have my usual suspects: pop, usually girl-pop, usually girl-power-girl-pop, with some emo-punk thrown in for good measure. So I tried to think a little outside my box. And I also wanted to touch on the friends theme (as opposed to the Friends theme, tho, that works too!!) of the last few days.

Finale: The Magic Store; The Muppets

Kermit:
It starts when we're kids, a show-off in school;
Makin' faces at friends, you're a clown and a fool.
Doin' prat-falls and bird-calls and bad imitations;
Ignoring your homework, it's that dedication.
You work to the mirror, you're getting standing ovations.

Fozzie:
You're burning with hope
Muppets:
You're building up steam.
What was once juvenilish is
Miss Piggy:
is grown-up and stylish,
Muppets:
You're close to your dream.
Then somebody out there loves you,
Stands up and hollers for more;
Fozzie:
More!
Muppets:
You found a home at the Magic Store.

[Musical bridge]

Kermit:
Why are there so many songs about rainbows?
Fozzie:
That's part of what rainbows do.
Gonzo:
Rainbows are memories
Miss Piggy:
Sweet dream reminders
What is it you'd like to do?
Muppets:
All of us watching, and wishing we'd find it;
Fozzie:
I've noticed, you're watching too.
Muppets:
Someday you'll find it, the rainbow connection,
The lovers, the dreamers, and you.

[Another Musical bridge]

Kermit/Muppets:(Starting slow, getting faster)
Life's like a movie, write your own ending
Keep believing, keep pretending
We've done just what we set out to do.
Thanks to the lovers, the dreamers, and you.

A while ago, there was a Muppet meme, and I forget who I got but Bart said it was wrong because obviously I'm Kermit.

If you look too hard at this song and the movie it ends, there is a dark side to it. In the Rainbow Connection Kermit asks if the voices he hears are the same as the Sirens that draw men to their death in the stories of Odysseus. That the lovers and dreamer and you should beware. And in this last stanza here, it suggests that they, the muppets, and ultimately the filmmakers, have done just like the Sirens. They've made you, the lovers and dreamers and audience, believe that there is a rainbow connection and that it means anyone can be a star and dreams come true. There is a cynicism that it is an illusion, like the Siren song and shooting stars that are really just pieces of rock, and the rainbow itself. But if you keep looking beyond that, too, you realize that the movie is real. A movie where all the leads are muppets. Those filmmakers -- Jim Henson and Frank Oz and them -- their dream DID come true. So their message isn't a false one after all. It's not a secret message of false hope, it's a plaintive message of real hope.

Life's like a movie, write your own ending.

Bart's right. I am Kermit.
