The Capitol Center for the Arts is a small theater as theaters go, but is a large venue for a town of 40,000 people. There are no bad seats--no pillars to block anyone's view and rows lettered A-Z. our seats were Row Y one in from the outside aisle and we had a spectacular view. Hammel on Trial opened, and was excellent. I remember the first time I saw him perform, at a concert in Indianapolis and not being impressed at all--he certainly had a way with his guitar but stage presence and vocals were nothing i was excited about. he's grown a lot (or that was a really bad night), either way, he's a lot of fun now. He's a good story teller, and political and overall i see why Ani tours with him.
Then Ani comes out, with her very pregnant belly claiming the space usually reserved for her guitar, the instrument pushed off to the side. She got to welcome a crowd of folks a matter of hours after the last senate seat was declared for the democrats, the energy in the room was exceptional. One tune in particular apparently set the baby to kicking and afterwards Ani did an impression of "baby-vs-guitar" pushing the back of the guitar away with her foot up in the air squalling "moooooom, stop it! get that thing offffffffff me!" it was very cute. It was the longest set i think i've ever seen her do, though the encore was shorter (after she pointed out for everyone that "that last sip of water was a mistake, i'm going to have to pee in about 2.2") ah well. it was excellent. good to be at a show right now, when it feels like we're actually going to have an opportunity to change some things in this country...
