Let me put it this way: when you don't respect someone, do you want to take care of them? Low self-esteem is not a 'defining character trait', it is a natural problem encountered by most people at some point in their lives, when they are learning that they are individuals. It's a response to the newness of realising one is an individual, and the fear that comes with venturing out of the nest and trying to find a place to fit in larger human society.

Essentially, low self-esteem is a response to fear. Fear of being shunned (and humans, being hyper-social creatures, are instinctively afraid of being shunned or ignored), fear of being ridiculed or cast out of the group. It isn't a 'character trait', because low self-esteem feeds itself by being a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you isolate yourself, then ultimately your fear of being shunned from the group doesn't matter, because you've shunned yourself. Like the man said, 'You wo'n't get hurt, but you wo'n't get loved either'.

Until you see a problem with thinking so badly of yourself, you can't really solve any of the other problems. Just know that whatever you choose, it is ultimately your decision to be happy or miserable, no matter what has happened in your life.
