Marilyn French has died. I've only ever read one of her books, The Women's Room, when I was in my early twenties and it changed my life, my view of the world and my view of myself as a woman. She exposed to me the depth of oppression against women, and how it is so endemic that even the nicest men that we love are still part of it.
I never read anything else she wrote, or knew much more about her than her Wikipedia entry, but I don't think I needed to. Despite not knowing her, I think the level of sadness I feel about her passing is a testament to the quality of her life and I hope that those who loved her know that and are comforted by it.
