Есть SBIR (NSF и oсoбеннo NIH). Нo прoще, если есть вoзмoжнoсть, пoдключиться к чьему-тo NIH грaнту в кaчестве subcontractor. Лучше всегo - нa стaдии нaписaния грaнтa.

Have u ever applied for any of those particular grants? Do u know anybody who did? What are the impressions?

I applied for SBIR a couple of times with no success. I've had more luck with regular NIH applications. If the main PI on the grant is good and is going to get the grant, and if he/she can justify having a specific part of the work subcontracted (which should not be terribly difficult), it should all work fine. The key is to have the right PI to agree to include this part (subcontract). The general fundability rates at NIH are 20% or so, but good people get funded almost with certainty. You need to have a PI who is (a) good and (b) interested in the specific service you are offering.

Computational biophysical chemistry. Mostly protein simulations.

I am in academia. This stuff is kinda hot, but so are many other things. :) In fact, you always have to prove that your calculations are going to be immediately useful for biologically/medically interesting applications. If you want to be marketable in the basic science (in our area anyway) you have to be VERY good, so right applications are almost always necessary.
