Last night was fun. JIll and I ended up eating at Tampopo, our new favorite place to eat. I bought a bottle of Pinot Noir to accompany our meal, and the check was less than $30. We were stuffed! And feeling a bit drunk. We made our way to The Khyber to see the Little Joy show. I ordered myself a whiskey on the rocks. Right behind me some guy ordered a beer. Then he proceeded to ask the bartender, "Hey, do you sell weed here? You know weed? Herb? Ganja?" Jill and I couldn't help but laugh. Some people are just so DUMB. And he was serious! He then walked outside with his beer and got all mad that it got taken from him because apparently you can't walk around outside with a beer in hand. (Unless it's a Sports parade or riot/celebration situation). DUMB! Weed guy showed up a few times more before the night ended.
I texted the drummer in my band to maybe come out for the show. He told me to check out the support band, The Dead Trees, and that they were fantastic. I then saw a friend of mine from class outside loading equipment into The Khyber. It turned out that he was in the supporting support band, The Robes. Usually I wouldn't care about seeing support bands, you can hear them well enough from the bar, but it was suddenly strange to me that I wanted to see all three bands and that I felt somewhat connected to them in various degrees. I had a few more whiskeys. Weed guy punched a sign or something inside, and then got kicked out of the bar for the night. He had blood all over his hand. It was gross. It didn't stop him from hanging outside of the bar for the rest of the night.
As we were watching the opening band, The Robes, I caught out of the corner of my eye, Jonas, the drummer of my band at the bar. The Robes were kind of lame. Really poppy and commercially sounding, but not very entertaining unless you were one of the dancing 21 year old miller light wielding girls in the front row. Naturally I commented to Jill that that's what my band needed...some slut dancing girl fans. I made my way to the bar and said hi to Jonas. We talked a bit about our band and music and such.
The next band, The Dead Trees, came on. They were really good! They kind of reminded me of Pavement, Dr Dog, and something else...Maybe the Teeth. Anyway, they finished, I went out to go smoke with Jill. A couple of moments later the lead singer and the bassist came out to smoke and walked right up to me and introduced themselves. They saw me hanging out with Jonas and wanted to know who I was. I told them that Jonas was in my band, and we all agreed that he was a really cool guy. Weed guy came over with his bloody hand and said something stupid to my two new friends so they went inside. I followed with JIll.
The final band, Little Joy, the band that we wanted to see, was about to go on. The problem was that it was fucking packed! I rarely have seen The Khyber that full. They started to sing and people were going nuts! This struck me as odd because their music is very folksy and islandy. My computer is trying to tell me that islandy is not a word. Anyway, I managed to cram myself within the crowd to get a decent spot. They were good, but the crowd was weird! It was far from typical Philly crowd. I quickly realized that The Khyber was filled with Brazilians. And they were jumping around and dancing and I was half expecting a soccer game to break out. It was a fun show though.
I said my good byes to everyone and then left. Weed guy was still outside trying to get back in. I said goodnight. We left. Supposedly we were hungry and we made a quick stop at Cantina and we ordered Nachos and specials (sauza shot and tecate) but that's somewhat fuzzy in my brain right now.
