Todd, Kevin, and Dmitry huddled around a table at the Dunkin’ Donuts next to their office building. The early morning stillness added to the conspiratorial, solemn nature of their endeavor, and, as with all groups of men which meet to discuss a common struggle, hard-boiled declarations, effortless camaraderie, and bewitching impulses were in the air and in their hearts.
“Dmitry. Kevin.” began Todd. “Jon Nason must be dealt with.”
“Tell me about,” mumbled Kevin.
“We’ve put up with Rick’s brainlessness for god knows how long. But this is just an insult. In all these years that we’ve tried to get him to implement productive changes to Brown Bean, he’s been completely stubborn and unmotivated. And now, when the shit really hits the fan, what does he do? He thrusts this insult of a person in our face. What a joke.”
Dmitry was staring out the window with a blank, sullen expression, almost as if he were willfully ignoring Todd. The truth was, this was music to his ears and he even imagined himself nodding vigorously in agreement. But Dmitry is one of those gruff men who recoil at the thought of displaying warm emphatic approval-an insular, repressed man, prone to bouts of melodrama and impatience.
“After being able to reflect a little, I’ve decided that quitting wouldn’t be a good option for any of us, especially while Rick is on vacation. It would leave a bad taste in my mouth. I don’t know about you guys, but I’m willing to see it through. This way, we’ll have ample time to look for new work and keep things copacetic with Rick.”
“So the question still remains,” said Kevin, just as Todd was about to resume speaking, “What are we gonna do about Jon Nason?”
“Hold your horses, Kevin. That’s what I’m getting to. I was doing some thinking last night and I’ve come to the conclusion that we can’t simply ignore him, and we certainly can’t be openly hostile. But there is one thing we can do which, I’m sure will prove to be very effective.”
“Yeah?” said Kevin.
“Distract him,” interjected Dmitry, still looking out the window.
“Precisely! You read my mind. I’m glad we’re on the same page about this. We load him up with tasks which appear important on the surface, but will just serve to keep him out of our hair. Of course, we have to play our cards right: we don't know this guy very well yet, we're going to have to test the waters a little at first.
