I went to help out at kinder one day and after reading to another child, I got to read a book to Ali. He was very keen for me to read out the names of different things in the pictures although he couldn’t say much. Suddenly, he couldn’t contain himself and started talking to me in his language even though he must have known I couldn’t understand ( Read more... )

From a workers perspective, parents coming to help out is so appreciated, especially if they actually go and do something such as reading or craft work(its no help when all they want to do is chat!) I couldn't stress to you how valuable that one-on-one time is for a child trying to grasp 2 languages. I had a lil danish boy, who's parents used Danish at home. I wish she'd been in a position to help me learn more than such basics as mum, dummy, drink and kiss.

As a teenage I used to go help with the kinder's and their reading, one evening at a night club a young girl (18 I hope...lol) came and gave me a big hug, she'd remembered me from the kinder reading even though she had never seen me afterwards. I was absolutely stunned (and yeah at first I thought she was just some tippy blonde.."I remember you from kindy" she opened with...lol)

Staffing in childcare is fairly minimal, it'd be great if more parents got involved, but then again, most parents have their children in daycare because they have to be else where.

Good onya, hope your lil cherubs are well

:o)
