Lucky man

I'm all right, Jack

Well, apart from the ever-increasing risk of death by global warming, life is good. Still the same old office politics but I can cope with that if they pay me, which they do. I'm learning lots about how large-scale commercial websites are run, helping newbies out by passing on my knowledge of company processes, writing and editing technical support material, producing prototypes of new web pages and doing a fair amount of web analytics for internal customers. I wanted to get away from pure technical writing and I've succeeded.

Last weekend it was sunny (and unlike now, mild too) so I took myself cycling on both days. On Sunday, I packed my rollerblades and cycled to Hyde Park where I hung out for a few hours enjoying being around the other skaters who, it must be said, were looking cool, weaving around cones and performing all manner of stunts.

It's good to get out of the house at weekends. I live in a virtual world for a lot of the time. It sort of evolved that way. Before they took my desk and PC away, I was quite happy going in to the office twice a week. Now, if I go into the office, I have to 'hot-desk' with a laptop which often means sharing a desk with a complete stranger who, in a worst case scenario, could be one of those sales types who's on the phone all day. It's just not worth the risk so I never go in.

In other news, I've finally escaped from the herd and bought a Macbook. A couple of friends (including keithlard) allayed my fears about leaving the world of Windows-based PCs and I made the break. So far, so good, now my computer is a pleasure to use rather than a source of stress and I'm confident I'll never have to touch a PC again. And just in time, the mere thought of 'upgrading' to Vista was beginning to haunt me...

One of the things Macs are really good for is music production. Recently, I've been testing the GarageBand application that comes free with the latest generation machines. It really rocks! It has a great deal of potential for recording both software and live instruments in a multi-track setup, and you don't need to have experience working in a studio to work out how to use it.
