rant number 1
im sick of hearing a different group of people saying they want to move to canada, and the previous group of people who wanted to move to canada 4 and 8 years ago now saying that the world is saved and everything is going to be peachy now because one man got elected to a position that people think is a lot more powerful than it really is. The real story, and where change MIGHT actually come from (be it good or bad) is that the democrats now have even greater control of both houses of congress, as well as the whitehouse. lets keep this straight though: simple Poli Sci 101, the PRESIDENT DOES NOT MAKE LAWS, nor does he have power of the purse. Congress does. I'm still not completely sold on the idea that much is going to change anyway, because lets face it, our two political parties really aren't that different.
rant number 2
i've said this before, and i'll say it again: if we want separation of church and state, the state shouldn't recognize marriages at all. it should only grant civil unions, and leave up to churchs what they will recognize as a marriage. But since our government is based on a judeo christian tradition, and was built from the ground up with those values in mind, and never really was completely separate, it has that value built into it. So instead of creating the separation that supposedly is so important, we decide to change the definition of an institution. I can't support that solution to the problem. I voted yes on 8 for the same reason that if the government decided to regulate what a valid baptism was, I would vote for what i believe to be true.
