This is a response to a prompt (mirrors) with a 500-word limit. I did about half that. Feedback?
What do you see when you look in the mirror? I know what I see. I see a beautiful boy with a beautiful face and a beautiful heart. I see a beautiful boy with a broken heart. I see a beautiful boy with a broken heart and a broken past.
I see a beautiful boy.
But what do you see?
I see blue, blue eyes that would pierce the veil were they clear. But they're not clear. I see blue, blue eyes that are clouded with a lack of self-confidence and a lack of direction fostered by a lack of parenting and a lack of parental caring.
What do YOU see?
I see lips that kiss well but don't kiss like they mean it. I see lips that don't kiss like they mean it because the beautiful boy has never been in love. He's been loved by many, but he's never been in love. He thinks he's been in love, but he doesn't know the meaning of love because he's never witnessed love. He doesn't understand love.
What do you SEE?
I see a beautiful face that is marked with fatigue from countless long nights spent in search of relief. I see a mouth that always tastes like beer and cigarettes. Always. I see a boy who endlessly chases hope but is never lucky enough to catch up; he is always a step behind, a second too late. I see a boy who need not search any longer.
What do you see when you look in the mirror?
I know what I see. I see a beautiful boy.
