A Stupid Bet | Haehyuk | PG-13 / AU, Romance | One-shot, 3818 words
Disclaimer: They’re my slaves. Nope, nothing is mine.
Donghae was a prick and a prick was created to toy around and break things. That should be Hyukjae’s reason if he was acting like nothing happened but the reality was; he was acting the opposite or technically said, heartbroken.

Notes: Unbeta-ed.

A Stupid Bet

A stupid bet, Donghae would call it. But that was what made it more fun. A group of high school boys roared with laughter. The youngest one that was standing in the middle gave his shorter hyung a pity pat on the shoulder.

“You lost,” another boy said, standing up. Donghae could only groan in misery as he looked up before gripping his hair in frustration.

“A bet is a bet, loser does the punishment,” the head of the gang, Heechul stood up. He inched closer to the boy who had his head buried in his arms. “Now, now, Donghae. Don’t loiter my precious time. Do it fast and end it fast,” Donghae leveled up his head to stare at the hyung of his.

Huffing and groaning in defiance, he stood up and straightened his uniforms. “Okay, okay,” Donghae responded weakly, stuffing his hands into his pocket.

“This would only last for a week,” Donghae stressed, shooting a glare to a group of boys who were still having the remnant of laughter to finish off.

“Fine. Whatever. Now, Lee Donghae,” Heechul shrugged his shoulder and pushed the other male to walk faster. Donghae’s feet betrayed him as he weakly and unwillingly dragged his feet to the place he visited the least in his school, library.

The rest of the boys found their seats and eyed the school’s Top Footballer make his way to a boy. That boy had his glasses on and tall piles of books were arranged before him, completely shielding his sight from the newcomer that was Donghae.

Donghae looked to where his friends were sitting, pleading for some mercy. Heechul motioned his hand to Donghae to move closer and mouthed something like ‘say it, NOW!’

Donghae cleared his throat, placing his palm on the back of his neck. That did not gain the boy’s attention.

Donghae tried one more time and it was when Hyukjae was standing up to pick the book he arranged on top of the building of the books.

That guy -Donghae’s classmate, school’s Mathematics genius and not to mention, school’s Vice-president of Student’s Council- looked confusedly at the confused male before him.

“Yes Donghae-ssi? May I help you?” Hyukjae asked, bewildered.

“I like you,” Donghae said as fast as possible. He swore he could hear his friends not far from them laughing maniacally.

Heechul -on the other section- clapped his hands, supported by the cat-calls from his fellow gang, not until the librarian came to their table, sending each of them warning glares.

Hyukjae stiffened. It did not take long before Hyukjae vanished from the library and then out from the school area and rushed immediately home. Donghae was left dumbfounded.

-

As expected, Hyukjae did not show up the next day.

-

Donghae knocked the door a few times before a middle aged lady came to open the door. He greeted her with a smile.

“Is Hyukjae home?” he asked politely.

Deciding that yesterday accident might be too much, Donghae chose to walk to Hyukjae’s home just to check on the Maths genius. Who knows something bad happened after Donghae’s silly confession. Furthermore, his hyungs and dongsaengs had been bugging him to visit Hyukjae. Heechul said before he left the school “The bet is still on,” and Donghae sighed.

Hmm, what is the bet? Let’s see-

“Confess to him and mingle along for a week. After that, ditch him. Easy as that,” Heechul stated, pointing to everybody around him asking for their agreements. All nodded.

The bet was not done out of revenge, hatred or jealousy -no it’s not. They were just a bunch of immature kids who wanted to have fun. Just that.

The lady -Donghae assumed she was Hyukjae’s mother- nodded. “Who are you?”

‘Who am I?’ Donghae idly scratched the back of his head.

“I’m….I’m…hah! I’m Hyukjae’s classmate and our teachers have assigned me to deliver his homework to him. Yeah..” Donghae said, waving the papers in his hand. Hyukjae’s mom invited him in and pointed to Hyukjae’s room upstairs.

“He’s doing his revision right now, just go straight into his room,” Hyukjae’s mom smiled at him before heading off into the kitchen. Donghae climbed the stairs carefully, feeling all nervous. ‘Why would I?!’

He knocked on Hyukjae’s door silently and turned the knob as he heard the latter voicing out ‘come in’ from inside the room.

-

Hyukjae turned around to greet his mom -or that’s what he thought- before jumping off the chair he was sitting on and pointed his index finger at the guest.

“What are you doing here?!” Hyukjae snapped as he hugged his Mathematics book tightly. Hyukjae grabbed the dust wiper hanging near him and prodded the said thing forward.

“Hey, hey,” Hyukjae continued shoving the dust wiper. “HEY!” Donghae took a hold of that feathery thing and swapped it away from Hyukjae’s hold.

“I’m here for good. I’m giving you these,” Donghae handed out the papers he had been holding to Hyukjae. “Your homework for today.”

Hyukjae loosened the hug around his book and put it on the table before taking the papers Donghae was offering.

“Sorry,” he muttered out, grinning gummily and all. Donghae thought it was cute and inched closer to wipe the bangs off from Hyukjae’s eyes -and Donghae had himself being pinned to the wall with Hyukjae’s arms across his neck.

“What are you doing?!” Hyukjae gritted his teeth. Donghae grunted. “Let me go.” And Hyukjae did as he stepped aside, freeing the poor boy.

“Can you stop freaking me out?” Hyukjae asked. Donghae rolled his eyes. “Can you stop freaking me out?” Donghae repeated. Again, Hyukjae smiled idiotically.

“Sorry. You know, self-defense,” Donghae chuckled at Hyukjae’s statement.  “So, that’s it. See you again tomorrow at school,” Donghae was about to go out when Hyukjae stopped him by tapping his shoulder lightly.

Donghae stopped at the door, turning around to see a flushed male. “Huh?”

“Hmm, about yesterday, err,” Hyukjae fumbled with the hem of his shirt. “You were just kidding around, right?”

Donghae chortled. He suddenly had this urge to hem this boy in his arms and devoured the porcelain skin. “What if I say; I was not kidding at all,” he winked playfully before leaving. Hyukjae would say a vow that he felt butterflies partying in his stomach.

-

Today at the school did not do any help to Hyukjae. How freaking impossible Donghae could be? Donghae was waiting in front of the gate for Hyukjae. Greeting him so ever sweetly and walking along with the vice-pres into the class. Of course the other kids stared unbelievably at them. School’s geek and school’s prince were walking together? Ridiculous but that was it.

It was during recess and Donghae was still tagging along with Hyukjae. Donghae followed him everywhere to the point where he turned down his group’s invitation to sit together in the canteen.

Hyukjae was sitting at a table while waiting for Donghae who was lining up to buy their food. Hyukjae grumbled silently and crumpled the torn paper in his hand. ‘What’s wrong with that kid?!’

Being carried away by the thought, he did not realize when Donghae placed the food in front of him. “Hyukjae?” Donghae poked the latter’s cheek.

Gaining back his sense, Hyukjae stared at the food in his plate. There was a carton of strawberry milk too. “How did you know-“

“-that you like strawberry milk?” Donghae smirked and Hyukjae nodded. He poked the short straw into the carton and took a sip of the pink liquid.

“Ain’t I your boyfriend?”

“..”

“Right?”

“..”

“Hyukjae?”

Hyukjae coughed hard and brought his palm over his chest to smooth out the coughing pain. Hyukjae stood up, pushing the chair backwards to produce a creaked noisy sound. He left immediately.

Donghae turned around to look at his gang. Heechul was thumbing up, smirking his diva out.

-

As the day passed, Hyukjae and Donghae had somehow grown closer. Donghae would sometimes drop by at Hyukjae’s house to have a study group with Hyukjae and Hyukjae would go to Donghae’s house during his free time. This was somewhat going beyond the plan Donghae had in the first place.

It was a weekend night and Donghae was having a sleepover at Hyukjae’s house since his family was away for a few days.

Hyukjae was sitting down on the floor, using his bed as the table while Donghae was using Hyukjae’s study table.

The sound of a pen being thrown was heard and Hyukjae looked up to only see Donghae burying his face onto the table. “What’s wrong?”

“I can’t get the answer!” Donghae whined, pouting. Hyukjae chuckled before standing up and sauntered closer to the study table.

“Hmm, let me see,” Hyukjae said and as if understanding to Hyukjae’s inaudible command, Donghae inched away a little bit, giving some space for Hyukjae.  Hyukjae took the pen Donghae threw earlier and started explaining about the mathematical problems.

Donghae did not listen to Hyukjae because he was too engrossed staring at Hyukjae fair skin. They were so close because Hyukjae was leaning down a little bit that his face was on the same level as Donghae’s. Hyukjae continued talking about the integration question but Donghae could care less. Hyukjae’s close proximity was far more interesting than that twisted boring calculus.

Not realizing what he was doing, Donghae leaned closer and pecked Hyukjae’s jaw. He himself widened his eyes at his courage. Hyukjae was even more than that.

“Wh-what are you doing?” Hyukjae asked, blinking a few times. Hyukjae stood up straight and avoided the latter’s eyes. Donghae raised himself from the chair and moved closer to Hyukjae, putting his hands on both of Hyukjae’s sides. Hyukjae was trapped by Donghae. They were so close that Hyukjae could feel Donghae’s breath tickling his face.

“D-Donghae,” Hyukjae’s voice vibrated, fear was present in his voice. Donghae leaned even closer and sealed his lips with Hyukjae’s plump ones. Hyukjae was taken aback. Who wouldn’t?

The kiss was slow, an innocent one, a mere one. Lips brushing against lips. They broke apart when the need of oxygen was inevitable. Hyukjae’s face was crimson red and Donghae tried his best to look as casual as possible.

“Uh..” Donghae backed away, letting Hyukjae away. Hyukjae rushed to the bathroom and slammed the door close.

When Hyukjae stepped out from the bathroom, Donghae was already asleep. He cuddled to the pillow Hyukjae’s mom prepared earlier.

Hyukjae carefully slipped into his bed, pulling the duvet over his head, hoping tomorrow would bring everything to the normal situation.

His heart skipped a beat when he heard a soft whisper came from below. He smiled secretly under the duvet, nonetheless kept the reply to himself.

-

A week had passed and the bet was supposed to end by now. It was early in the morning when Donghae walked lazily towards his locker, pulling out the books he might need for the classes later from the locker. Heechul came and slammed the door of the locker close.

“Lee Donghae,” he called out, holding something huge in his hand.

“Ne hyung? And what’s with that freaking large calendar you’re holding?”

Heechul pointed at the dates -started from the date the bet was on until the date of that day. “It’s passed a week. You know what I mean,” the evil smirk graced Heechul’s lips and Donghae wanted to groan out loud because he understood well that smirk. Heechul’s smirk only appeared when something ridiculous was in his head.

But Heechul smirked every time, so simply saying; everything Heechul thought about was ridiculous.

Heechul snapped his finger in front of the younger. “You heard me, fish?”

“Yes, fine. Okay, I will do it tomorrow or a day after that. Got that?” Donghae said, pointing at the calendar. Somehow, the strange feeling of guilty that he did not know it could ever exist started creeping into his system. He decided to ignore that.

-

Hyukjae’s phone beep-ed and the said boy fished the gadget out of his pocket, struggling with the thick books in his arms. Succeeded eventually, he pressed the button to display a short message from Donghae.

Meet me at the soccer room tomorrow by 3 pm. It read. Hyukjae merely shrugged his shoulder before resuming his walk, not sensing anything wrong with the content of the text.

-

Donghae was behaving unlike his usual self today and Hyukjae noticed that when he turned down Hyukjae’s offer to have a study group together later in the evening. He must be busy with practice, Hyukjae thought.

Taking a quick glance at his watch enveloping his left wrist, Hyukjae picked up the books on the table and stuffed them into his bag.

“I’m going now,” he bowed to the members of the Student Council. Leeteuk, the president nodded in acknowledgement and watched the retreating figure out of the door of the room.

Hyukjae arrived pretty early at the soccer room and Donghae’s presence was nowhere to be found. He waited for about 10 minutes before someone opened the door. Donghae.

And followed by the other students Hyukjae barely knew. He knew some. Kyuhyun -his junior in Maths club-, Heechul -his..hmm, cousin? - and the rest of the boys he needed to be introduced first to know well. Hyukjae wondered why were they doing here with Donghae? Of course he knew that they were Donghae’s friends but was it necessary to bring his group to meet him?

“Let’s stop seeing and pretend like we have never been close before,” Donghae said, not giving a chance for Hyukjae to greet him in the first place. The latter stared at the athlete, bewildered. What’s going on?

“Wh-what?”

“You don’t know me and I don’t know you. That’s it,” Donghae added, his casual self smirking in victory but he did not feel in one. Heechul smirked along, patting the younger on the head. He watched the cousin of his started to tremble, fighting the tears that were treating to flow out. He wondered why would the younger want to harbor his precious tears for this silly confession. He’s just silly and too fragile, Heechul came to a conclusion.

And of course like what they expected, Hyukjae skipped school the next day and no, Donghae wasn’t assigned to deliver anything to the absent student.

-

Hyukjae’s family had a gathering that night at his house. He was not feeling well and not a bit wanted to be down mingling with his relatives because he knew Heechul was one of them. He locked himself in his room, still processing the previous incident at the school.

He should have known in the first place -or he knew already- that Donghae was a prick and a prick was created to toy around and break things. That should be Hyukjae’s reason if he was acting like nothing happened but the reality was; he was acting the opposite or technically said, heartbroken.

‘What’s wrong with me?!’ he slapped his cheek, hard. The train of his thoughts was interrupted by the knocking sound on his door. Too lazy to check who’s standing outside, he just allowed the newcomer inside and not bothering to look at the guest.

“Hey,” the guest called and Hyukjae’s first response was to snap up his head, shivering and looking frightened at the guest; Heechul. “What are you doing here?” he managed to say. Heechul took a while to look around before answering the latter. “Family gathering?”

Hyukjae dropped his shoulders. Fiddling with the duvet folded on the bed, Hyukjae remained silent and it was Heechul who chose to break -couldn’t stand- the silence. “Are you still thinking about what happened last Monday that it was the main reason for you to skip school?” the older asked, eyeing the cousin of his ducking his head down. Hyukjae nodded and Heechul sighed before approaching the younger and settled down on the floor.

“You like him, don’t you?”

“Wh-what, what?! NO, OF COURSE NO,” Hyukjae flustered upon hearing the question. Heechul chuckled and it sounded less evil and scary. “Come on, Hyukkie,” -Hyukjae’s nickname- “I know you too well, hadn’t you been confessing to me about him since the first year you’re in high school?”

“NO! I DID NOT,” Hyukjae jumped up standing. The light hue dusting his both cheeks was Heechul’s next victim. “Then, why are you blushing?” asked the taller, prodding the reddened cheek.

“Hyung….” The younger whined, prying off the slender finger pricking on his cheek. “Want me to help? Help you to get Donghae so that you guys can share your second kiss?” Heechul teased as he watched the light hue turning more visible around Hyukjae’s cheek.

“HOW DID YOU KNOW?!” Hyukjae almost shrieked. He did shriek actually.

“Knowing that fish, he tells everything to me, boy,” the older cousin took a seat on his brother’s bed while the latter was still loitering around the room, embarrassment taking over.

“Come on Hyukjae, we’ve known each other since the diapers days, there’s nothing to be embarrassed at,” Heechul stood up, holding out his hand and had Hyukjae staring confusedly at him.

“Can I have back my Hyukkie now so that I can treat my grumbling tummy?” the offered hand was still waiting and Hyukjae smiled, feeling relieved that he could count on his hyung and accepted the offer.

“I will help you, for sure,” Heechul winked and Hyukjae couldn’t blush brighter.

-

“In NOW!” Heechul pushed the reluctant boy into the room. Donghae fought against it, trying his best to struggle out but Heechul had his full force with the help of Kyuhyun and Siwon to pull and push the football player into the room.

Hissing and cursing, Donghae brushed his arms. Siwon and Kyuhyun sure had metal hands. “The fuck the want me to do here?!” Donghae hissed, reaching for the door knob to open the door only to discover that he was locked up in the room from outside.

Whilst on the other side, Heechul smirked victoriously, tossing the silver key in the air before throwing in into the trash nearer. The school management must have the spare key, Heechul thought. Kyuhyun and Siwon watched their senior walking away, shaking their heads.

-

“Hyung….? Are you here? Why do you want me to meet you here?” Hyukjae called out, rising himself from the chair. “Hy-hyukjae?” Donghae responded, confused why Hyukjae was here too. “What are you doing here?” he continued.

Sensing the other presence was not his cousin’s and it was Donghae, Hyukjae backed away a bit. “Heechul-hyung wanted to meet me here. What are you doing here?” he almost stuttered. Donghae scratched his nape and his brain wasn’t working properly to answer Hyukjae’s question.

“I don’t know,” was what he managed to form as an answer. “Oh o-okay,” the latter nodded.

It was silent after that, none of them bothered to speak up. The awkward silence lingered in the air before Donghae decided to break it.

“Hyukjae,” - “Donghae,”

Both of them called out simultaneously and somehow the awkward atmosphere disappeared just like that as they started laughing at each other. “You go first,” Donghae said, grinning at their ridiculous state just now.

“No, you first,” Hyukjae declined, asking Donghae to go first.

“Mm, okay,” Donghae paused, looking for suitable words. “I’m sorry about that day. I mean, it’s not that I don’t want to befriend with you anymore. It’s just……just forget about what I said that day,” Donghae explained shortly as he found no better words to express his thoughts into sentences. Hyukjae nodded as a reflex not because he fully understood what Donghae said.

“You’re next,” Donghae voiced out and Hyukjae was nervous and all he wanted to do now was to escape away from this situation and never came back but he could not.

Taking a deep breath, “I like you,” there he said it. He was afraid to look up at Donghae, afraid if Donghae would get pissed off and start to spurt out ugly words at him. But that did not happen, instead he felt Donghae approach him, reaching out his hand to stroke Hyukjae’s cheek.

“I’m sorry for liking you. I’m sorry,” Hyukjae started to sob hard as the crystals glided down his cheeks gracefully. “No, don’t-“ -- “I don’t deserve to love anybody. It’s okay, I will bury down this feeling so that it won’t grow larger because it’s not supposed to exist. I’m sorry Dong-“

Donghae harshly pulled the sobbing boy into his embrace and shut him up with his own lips. Donghae kissed Hyukjae desperately. The kiss was salty because of the tears and it took a while for Hyukjae to digest the whole thing revolving around him.

Donghae pulled Hyukjae closer, eliminating spaces between their bodies as Hyukjae responded back to the kiss. Hyukjae raised his arms and wrapped them around Donghae’s neck, one hand working on Donghae’s hair, messing it. Donghae trapped Hyukjae in his arms possessively, stroking up and down the latter’s side.

The previous desperate and unexpected kiss turned into something needy and longing that both of them had wished and dreamed about before. It was passionate when Donghae worked his magic on his tongue. Hyukjae moaned into the kiss. For a while they forgot about the necessity of oxygen. Donghae broke the kiss, much to Hyukjae’s dismay.

“I’m sorry. I’m sorry, really sorry,” Donghae whispered with his lips still brushing Hyukjae’s. Hyukjae cried once again and Donghae kissed the tears away. Hyukjae nodded, gripping Donghae’s hands that were cupping his face and kissed them.

-

“Did you hear that?” Heechul asked, plastering his ear to the cold wall of the door. “I think I heard a moan,” Heechul added, his eyes twitching for a sign of solid concentration. Kyuhyun snorted beside him, looking past them at the eyes which were staring at them questioningly.

“Hyung!” Kyuhyun smacked unintentionally on Heechul’s back. Of course the latter shot a dagger glare back to Kyuhyun but it was a quick one. “Teacher is on the way!” Kyuhyun continued, standing up and being a worrywart that was not his usual self.

“GO!” Heechul pushed Kyuhyun and let the younger deal with the teacher. “Uhm. Park-songsaengnim, can we discuss about the Math Olympiad? I have some twist going on in my head. Shall we?” Kyuhyun turned the teacher around and motioned him to walk forward.

-

“So, am I forgiven?” Donghae asked while caressing the other boy’s cheek. Hyukjae chuckled.

“No.”

Donghae’s expression soured up. “Why?!” he whined childishly and Hyukjae chuckled again.

“It’s only me who talked about this while you haven’t said a word yet,” Hyukjae pouted and Donghae couldn’t help but to kiss the pout. Hyukjae lightly hit the latter.

“I love you.”

Donghae’s eyes were brimming with hope. Hyukjae tapped his chin, face displaying calculation. A small smile climbed onto the lips of the prefect.

“You’re forgiven.”
