When you're young and foolish once upon a time doesn't seem that far away but it is when you're older and maybe not wiser but definitely more jaded. At least Vanessa thinks so. She had visions of long flowing dresses with a dark haired prince and his sarcastic humor blonde haired king and his many faces. In her visions (read: fantasies) everything was perfect and candy coated but life isn't like that. Life is cruel and unusual and it burns straight through the bone to the marrow.

Life is painful and Vanessa knows that better than anyone.

If it wasn't then she wouldn't be lying here on the floor with her best friend and a bottle of wine (which he managed to polish off mostly by himself) wondering how she's going to tell him that his happily ever after ran off again. That she hopped a plane, in all her glimmering glory, to god knows where to follow a boy who's almost her reflection. It's kind of funny that the two best friends both fell for the golden kids with their crowns and their smiles...but then again it's not so funny.

Funny was when she bought Dan a girlfriend for Cedric and named her Chelsea.

Funny was when Jenny talked her into getting cornrows.

Funny is not lying on the floor possibly pregnant with your best friend's baby while your in love with someone else and he is too. No, funny is not that at all.

Vanessa's not sure what she should tell him first. All she knows is that Dan likes to hear the bad news before the good so that he can get it out of the way but she's not sure which is worse. Is her possibly pregnancy worse than Serena not leaving behind a glass slipper this time so that Dan can rescue her and kiss it all better?

Logic says that pregnancy is worse but logic doesn't fair well with life and love and the combination. If it did then she wouldn't be in this predicament. She wouldn't be on the floor nearly about to break down (while Dan's oblivious and passed out) because they made a stupid mistake when they felt alone and lost in the woods with the shadows leaning down on them.

Dan's cell phone dings and Vanessa hopes and prays that it's Serena begging for her white night back because it would be one less thing to worry about...but it's not. It's just Jenny, the poster girl of rags to riches who traded her pauper lifestyle for one of a queen. The Queen's text is short but not sweet and basically says to tell Rufus that she's staying at a friend's house.

Vanessa sighs and puts the phone down. Life isn't a fairytale but sometimes she wishes that it was because reality leaves little to be desired.
