Rai's story starts when he is only seven years old--and standing in the middle of a demonic pentagram covered in the blood of his best friend's cousin, Mio. Tricked into participating in a ritual that sacrificed her to entities called the Diabolo, Rai (along with his best friend Ren) had been essentially sold to the devil in a deal they didn't know they were making. They wanted the power to protect Mio from her abusive parents. They got that power, but the catch was...they lost Mio in the process, along with their souls.

Ren left town with his family not long after, his parents unable to stand the accusations that their son was a murderer, leaving the orphan Rai, unknowing of his parentage, even so much as his last name, to fend for himself in a community that hated and shunned him.

Rai isn't seen for another 10 years, when he reappears to remind Ren of the fact that they've sold their soul to the devil and inform him that oh, btw, when we turn 18 we're going to go insane and kill everyone around us, fun times. And so after watching Ren's mom finally snap and light herself up like a tiki torch, Ren and Rai go on adventures in order to 'save' kids like themselves, who made deals with the Diabolo. Catch is, there's no redemption for those who sold themselves over--only swift deaths while they're still human. Rai and Ren make a promise to kill each other before they fall.

The two of them are very powerful together. The ability Rai gained is that of ultimate defense--no attack against him will damage him. This goes along with Ren's power of ultimate offense. The shield and the sword. Together, they're basically unstoppable. Seperated...not so much. And they become separated when Rai falls to the Diabolo unexpectedly, becoming the Sixth Great Spirit, Nebiros--a demon whose power is only surpassed by his insanity and sadism. Pretty much the exact opposite of Rai's eccentric, but generally kind nature.

Nebiros sacrificed one by one the rest of the six spirits in an attempt to open a door to the realm of the Diabolo--essentially creating hell on earth. This was the wish of his master--a girl no one had seen for ten years. Mio. The miserable girl who'd decided that, since she couldn't be happy, she didn't want anyone else to be either, including the two boys who wanted to do nothing but protect her. Ren begins to fight Nebiros and Mio to stop the impending apocalypse, assisted by two of the six spirits who'd survived Nebiros's treachery (Tsukiko and Kyouya) but the two are almost completely equal in power, since the true strength of Nebiros had been split between Ren and Rai. Unable to win by power, Nebiros set a snare for Ren, tricking him into dropping his guard and coming in close to attack him--but Ren knew what Nebiros was really trying to do, and attacked him in the same moment that Nebiros struck out. With each of them holding the other's heart, Ren apologized to Rai and held him in his arms, the catalyst needed for Rai to throw off the influence of Nebiros and come back to his senses, just before Ren's power of destruction engulfed the both of them, killing Rai and destroying Nebiros in the process.

Ren: Rai's best friend, other half, and more. If not for the fact that the two of them are doomed to die, they probably would have stayed together their whole lives. Ren and Rai promised to kill each other before they fell to the Diabolo, unfortunately Rai fell faster than the two of them ever could have imagined. Nebiros has a dangerous obsession with Ren due to the blond carrying half of his power. Rai's love for Ren is perverted by the demon, until the demon wants to kill him so Ren can stay with him forever.

Mio: Ren's young cousin. Mio was abused by her parents, Ren and Rai were willing to do anything to protect her. This devotion and love resulted in the two young boys being tricked into participating in the ritual that granted them their powers and started everything. Nebiros calls Mio his master, though there really is no loyalty between them.

Nebiros: The sixth great spirit, Nebiros, is wholly insane. The major general of the six great spirits, Nebiros is their leader, but has absolutely nothing against sacrificing them one by one in order to meet his goal. He is described as 'the especially brutal, heinous one that bestows every conceivable pain.' He is a complete sadist and enjoys torturing and killing without reserve. He will then preach to the corpses as if they were still capable of hearing him. While he is within Rai's body, he is not Rai. He is dangerously obsessed with Ren and 'loves' him--for as much as a demon can love anyone. Nebiros's true form is that of a massive goat-man, standing on cloven hind legs with a mostly humanoid but heavily muscled torso, with a goat's head. (According to Judeo-Christian mythology, Nebiros is an alternate name of the demon Naberius, a marquis of Hell and perhaps better known as Cerberus. He also appears as a three headed dog, a black crane, or a crow. 'He makes men cunning in all arts (and sciences, according to most authors), but especially in rhetoric, speaking with a hoarse voice.' He also skilled in predictions and necromancy.)

Nana: One of the six spirits, called Sargatanas. Nana falls in love with Rai, and Nebiros takes advantage of that to get her to attack Ren. She doesn't fall for his trick, knowing enough about Rai to realize that he would never do something like that. Instead, she saves Ren from one of the other six spirits and is killed by Nebiros.

Powers: Rai's ability is that of the 'ultimate shield.' He is (in canon) absolutely immune to any harm, physical or magical. This includes illness of any sort, whether it be something as simple as the common cold or something like cancer. Rai cannot get sick, and if he does it's a signal of something much worse. When paired with Ren, they have enough power to kill any diabolo they come across. As Nebiros, he has access to a limited amount of offensive ability of his own--much like Ren's 'ultimate sword.' While not as powerful as Ren, he is still powerful enough to kill most anyone he needs to.

Other: Rai has an ultra-sensitive sense of smell and hearing. He is very intelligent as well, and well-spoken.
