A/N: *ducks from tomatoes* I know that I haven't finished the last chapter to Losing Control yet, but I promise that I am working on it and it will be done soon. This fic has been floating around in my head for a week or so and I finally had to write it because it wouldn't leave me alone. All mistakes in here are my own as the wonderful blankstatic hasn't read it to make sure all my grammar was correct. Also I want to thank everyone for their wonderful comments to my one-shot "Fun in the Sun". My life's been really weird and annoying and your comments really made me smile and feel a lot better. So enough of my rambling. Enjoy!

Prologue

It was a dark and stormy night.

In fact, it was far darker and far stormier than Los Angeles had ever seen in a very long time. Thunder rumbled across the sky sending people running for cover in their cozy homes. Yet for some reason Demi Lovato found herself hurtling down the highway in her 66 cherry red mustang convertible instead of snuggling deep into her comforter in her nice big warm bed. She couldn’t decide on whom she blamed more for this. Did she blame her sort of boy friend Joseph Jonas for dragging her to a UNICEF benefit dinner? Did she blame her ex-best friend and ex-lover Selena Gomez for actually showing up to the benefit when Demi had always known it was her favorite cause? Or did she blame herself, for actually going with Joe and making herself believe that she could actually get away with going the entire evening without seeing the other girl.

Demi growled. She couldn’t understand why life had to be so complicated. Why couldn’t she just spend one evening supporting an important cause? Demi had lost track of how long she had been driving on the slicked streets of L.A. It almost seemed like a lifetime ago since she had fled the benefit and into the stormy weather waiting for her outside. The weather conditions seemed reflect the emotions that were coursing through her and Demi almost had to wonder if her emotions were being projected around her.

The sky lit up giving the illusion for just a second that it was day time before darkness quickly engulfed Demi again. It was if a light bulb had lit above her head as she thought back to the dinner and how everything had gone wrong. She thought about what had happened to cause her to drive in this stormy weather when she normally would not have.

For the millionth time that evening Demi tried to tell herself that everything was going to be alright. She tried to convince herself yet again that even if she saw her ex-whatever Selena was did not mean that anything horrible was going to happen. Selena had moved on to Taylor so it was not as if she was going to care if Demi was in the room. Demi glanced beside as Joe squeezed her hand to show his support. She gave him her best smile as she tried to convince herself again for the billionth time that she was happier with Joe. That was he was better for her.

“It’s gonna be ok, “Joe told her softly.

Of course Joe could not possibly know that because he didn’t fully understand everything. Sure he knew that Demi was no longer best friends with Selena, but what he didn’t realize is that they had been together. That they hadn’t just drifted apart because of busy schedules like they had been leading everyone to believe. That their lie had been the only thing they had agreed on since they were happy.

When they entered the banquet hall of the Hilton Hotel Demi immediately spotted many celebrities that she recognized. There weren’t as many Disney Stars as she had expected, but she did spot Miley Cyrus with her boy friend Liam sitting at their table already. The beginning of the evening seemed to go very well. Demi had been able to talk to many people she already knew and those she had never met before.

Of course she had seen Selena sitting across the room with Taylor Swift and the rest of the cast of Wizards, but so far she had been able to avoid her for the beginning of the evening. That was until she made the mistake of going to the bathroom. Demi stood at the sink washing her hands. Miley had already left to go back to the table. She hadn’t wanted to leave Liam by himself for too long. She was so focused on washing her hands that she didn’t know there was anyone else in the room until she heard a small gasp from behind her. Her head snapped up and she caught sight of Selena in the mirror standing behind her. Even after months of silence Demi found herself still being able to read the emotions written on the other girls face as if she was reading the New York Times or her favorite novel. She could see the sadness and regret written in her eyes but her face was hardened with lines of anger and doubt. Demi didn’t have to look in the mirror to know that her features mirrored the other girl’s emotions. They stared at each other for what seemed like an eternity before either of them spoke.

“Demi.”

“Sel.”

They each breathed out the others name at almost the same time. The staring continued, and quite honestly Demi had no idea what to say to Selena. Ever since their break up, Demi had imagined a million different scenarios to imagine what it would happen when Demi ran into Selena again. Some ended with the two fighting which usually led to tears. Others ended with the two getting back together and also usually ended in tears. But now that Demi was actually standing right in front of the other girl she had no idea what to say or do.

“What are you doing here?” Selena asked.

Demi was surprised at how much anger she could hear dripping from Selena’s voice. Demi had given up her anger a long time ago. Except now that Demi could hear the anger seething in Selena’s voice she could feel her own anger building up.

“I’m here to support a good cause,” Demi said quietly.

“My cause,” Selena angrily reminded.

“I can’t do it anymore,” Demi yelled, “I can’t keep tip toeing around everything just because you might be there. I came here to support a good cause and I don’t give a shit if you don’t like it.”

Laughter erupted from Selena’s lips. Demi stared in horror as Selena practically fell to the floor bubbling with laughter. Demi waited as Selena composed herself. She should have walked away but a part of her wanted to know why the other girl was laughing. Once she was calm the hardened expression replaced her face.

“You really have changed haven’t you?”

“You keep saying that,” Demi snapped, “I’m still waiting to hear you tell me how I changed so much.”

They were silent for a moment as Selena gathered her thoughts.

“You went on tour and you left me,” Selena said quietly, “Suddenly you were tweeting everyone but me. Suddenly you were hanging out with everyone and you didn’t even look like you missed me. Suddenly you stopped texting me.”

Demi stared at her, as she tried to form a thought in the jumbled mess that was her brain. She now realized that maybe she had made mistakes. But Selena had never given her the chance to explain. She had just ended it. She had ended in the same way Joe had ended his relationship with Taylor. Except even worse. Selena had broken up with her voice mail and hadn’t answered any of Demi’s phone calls or texts after that.

“How dare you!” Demi snapped.

“What?” Selena gasped.

“You don’t get the right to make assumptions Selena,” Demi yelled, “You don’t get to break up with me in a voice mail, never answer my phone calls or texts to explain and still think you know what happened.”

Demi felt the tears prickling in the corner of her eyes. She fought to keep the sobs that were rising in her throat. Selena didn’t have the right to see her cry anymore. She wasn’t about to break down in front of her and show how weak she was.

“Then explain it to me,” Selena snapped, “Explain to me why you stopped texting me. Why you stopped answering my calls.”

Demi felt the anger inside of her reach its breaking point. This entire break up could have been avoided if Selena had only just talked to her. Demi felt all the anger that she thought had disappeared months ago.

“It wasn’t the same,” Demi snapped, tears silently spilling down her cheeks, “I couldn’t take reading your texts and hearing your voice knowing that I couldn’t reach out and touch you. I tried my best to make myself busy hoping that the tour would be over in a blink of an eye and I could go home to you. But then you left me that voice mail and my world just crumbled. You didn’t even give me a chance to explain. Why didn’t you just give me the chance to explain?”

By the time Demi finished her rant, her tears were freely flowing down her cheeks. She didn’t give Selena a chance to respond. She already knew that the other girl probably had no answer for her anyway. She could tell by the look of shock written across Selena’s features at Demi’s outburst. She turned and pushed open the bathroom door only to run into Joe. She quickly wiped away her tears and tried to explain what happened to him.

“Don’t bother,” Joe said, waving his hand in the air, “I heard everything.”

“I’m sorry,” Demi said quietly, turning her gaze to the floor.

“Were you ever going to tell me?” Joe snapped, “Did you even want to be with me?”

Demi turned her gaze back to her boy friend. Her tears began to slide down her cheeks again as she tried to come up with an explanation. She opened her mouth but the words just didn’t leave her mouth.

“I get it,” Joe said, his voice breaking, “We’re over Demi.”

Demi watched as Joe walked away from her and back into the banquet hall. She opened her mouth to call after him but his name died on her lips. She stared down the empty hallway for awhile before she realized she needed to leave before Selena left the bathroom. She fled to the nearest exit, which ended up being a back door so that no one saw her leave. Her life was shattering around her. She didn’t need the paparazzi and the media hassling her as well.

And that’s how Demi came to be speeding down the highway. She wasn’t sure where she was going, but she knew that she needed to get as far away from her life as she could. Another burst of lightening lit up the sky, a bolt striking the highway right in front of Demi’s car. Fear seized the singer as she swerved to avoid it. The road beneath her tires slipped away causing Demi to begin to spin in circles. She hadn’t ever learned to drive in these kinds of conditions as Los Angeles never saw a storm as horrible as this usually. Demi had no idea how to get her car under control. Demi jerked the wheel the wrong way hoping to even the car out, but instead sent the car off the road and into a pole. Demi slammed forward, but her seat belt kept her from slamming into the steering wheel in front of her. The air bag deployed throwing her back against her seat.

Demi popped the air bag with a pen she found in the car door, relieving the pressure she felt against her chest. She sighed with relief, nothing seemed to be broken. She seemed to be ok for the most part. Her hands shook and she knew it was probably because she was in shock. Demi had never been in an accident like this before, only a minor fender bender.

The sky lit up again as another lightening struck the pole she had crashed into. Suddenly the saying lightening never strikes twice popped into her mind and she couldn’t help but think that whoever said that was an idiot. Lightening had not only struck once, but twice for Demi.

Creak!

The shrieking sound of mental breaking filled the air and Demi looked up just in time to see the metal light pole break in half and come hurtling down crushing the car. The pole smashed the front of her car. The front dashboard caved under the pressure of the pole pushing the steering wheel against Demi, putting pressure on her stomach and crushing her legs from the weight of the dashboard and pole combined. A shriek left Demi’s lips but was drowned out as thunder rumbled against the sky.

Demi felt pain course throughout her. She had always known that one day she was going to die. Everybody died eventually. She had no idea that she would die with everyone in the world hating her. As she sat there she couldn’t even bring herself to cry anymore. She had wasted her tears on Selena and Joe so that when it was for herself she just couldn’t do it anymore.

There had been so many stories of people close to death seeing their entire life flash before their eyes. But that wasn’t what happened to Demi. Instead every single regret she had, everything she wished she could have done, and everything she should have said flashed in her mind. Most importantly, Demi thought of Selena and how she hadn’t fought hard enough for their relationship.

Demi stared out into the storm thrashing about above her. In the midst of the rain and the trees, a shooting star appeared. It took a moment for Demi to realize what it was because she didn’t think it was possible to see one in the middle of a thunderstorm. Demi didn’t think it would do any good, but she decided to make a wish anyway.

“I wish I had another chance,” Demi whispered, just as the shooting star disappeared from sight.

She kept repeating the wish in her mind as she felt herself entering a tunnel. Darkness surrounded her slowly suffocating her. First she lost her hearing and then her vision got smaller and smaller. She felt as if she were in a shrinking tunnel. Just before the darkness completely engulfed her she saw Selena’s face in her mind. Her last thought was how much she wished she could have fixed things between them.
