~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~
A small gasp slipped through her lips as a white searing pain shot through her skull; threatening to explode like firecrackers on the fourth of July. Her hand twitched so briefly that it would have been impossible to catch it unless one had been staring at it unblinkingly. Not even Sonny herself had caught the movement and she was the one who was trapped in the mind of the unknown body. The pounding in her ears from the racing of her heart beat was slowly driving her insane. She desperately tried to make her arms move so she could grab a hold of her head. Yet no matter how hard she willed herself to move not even a pinky finger would budge; with the exception of the earlier incident with her hand.
Sonny gave up her hand moving mission when she realized the harder she thought the more her head threatened to explode. She tried to clear her mind hoping that it would relieve some of the pain she herself had caused. Just when she thought she might succeed a piercing shriek filled the air which caused her pain to triple in seconds. Voices filled the room and unwanted cries for help died in her mind. She caught bits and pieces of the conversation going on around her as she went in and out of consciousness.
The one word that rang clear in Sonny’s ears was “CLEAR”.
Sonny gasped for breath as she sat straight up in bed clutching her chest. Images of her nightmare flashed through her mind causing a fear to build up inside of her that Sonny had never experienced before in her life. Sonny did her best to push the horrific images from her mind as she focused on her breathing. Her eyes squeezed shut; she began to count hoping the numbers would drown out the terror she still felt.
The numbers floated through mind consuming her thoughts until the last of the bad thoughts had finally been pushed through her mind. Her headache slowly lessened to a dull ache and Sonny was grateful for that. She had never been the type of person who took pain well. It was then that she felt a pair of eyes burning holes in her back.
Sonny slowly opened her eyes and found Chad beside her staring intently. She could see both fear and concern swirling in his blue eyes. He seemed to want to reach out to comfort her while at the same time he was afraid to do anything that might set her off again. It was then that realization dawned on her that she had no idea when she had fallen asleep or that the blonde haired boy beside her had shared the bed with her.
“Sonny?” Chad asked, “Are you okay?”
Sonny slowly nodded her head. That seemed to be all it took to assure Chad that she wouldn’t break if he moved because he pulled her into his arms as a sigh of relief escaped his lips.
“You scared me Sonny,” Chad told her, “Don’t ever do that again!”
Sonny knew she could have asked him what happened, but she didn’t want him to become even more worried. She already felt guilty as it was that she had scared him to begin with. Though a small part of her was grateful she had someone in her life that would stay with her to make sure she was alright. Chad may have been an ass to everyone else, but she was lucky enough to see his soft side. A side that rarely ever came out. And while Sonny may have started out thinking that was a cute side of Chad she would later decide that it was even more annoying than his usual “All about Chad” self.
~~*~~*~~
Hours later Sonny found herself with her back pressed against the locked door to the girl’s bathroom in school in an attempt to get away from Chad, who had self appointed himself as her body guard for the day. Whatever had happened the night before had scared him so badly that he had felt the need to attend school with her to make sure that it did not happen again. Sonny had never seen him with such a protective side before and she had thought it was cute. Especially since he was risking his ‘I don’t care about anything’ reputation to make sure she was safe.
Yet as the day wore on the little things that she had originally found endearing were starting to grate on her last nerve. If she had a quarter for every time he asked her if she was alright or the number of times he wouldn’t let her pick up a dropped pencil she would probably be just as wealthy as Chad Dylan Cooper himself.
“Sonny are you okay?”
Sonny cringed. She was suddenly grateful that the bathroom doors had locks on them because she would not put it past him to barge in if he thought something was wrong. However, she also wouldn’t put it past him to find a janitor and charm his way into getting the door unlocked that way.
“I’m fine Chad,” Sonny replied, “I’ll be out in a minute.”
A low sigh escaped Sonny’s lips as she headed over to the sink. She stared at her reflection in the mirror and for a brief second she couldn’t recognize the girl staring back at her. The girl in the mirror looked so lost and confused. Her fingers brushed lightly against the mirror. Their actions were identical and yet they were so different. She couldn’t seem to grasp the difference between them.
Pulling her hand away she noticed a red substance sticking to her fingers. Her nose scrunched up in disgust as she hurriedly turned the water on to wash it away. She was so focused on washing away the icky substance that she didn’t notice Alex exit a bathroom stall behind her. Sonny glanced up to see if there was anymore of the good on the mirror when she noticed Alex in the mirror. Yet the girl in the mirror wasn’t Alex either. The girl in the mirror looked like Alex and moved like Alex, but the girl in mirror looked miserable. She could see so much sadness shining in her brown orbs. She couldn’t understand where all of this misery came. The Alex that Sonny knew was always happy.
“Sonny?”
Alex’s words broke the spell that had fallen over the two teens. Sonny had no idea how long they had been staring at each other through the mirror when Alex had broken her out of her trance.
“Alex.”
“What are you doing here?”
Sonny didn’t hear Alex ask why she wasn’t with her body guard Chad anymore. It was as if those five words were the trigger to a spell causing a fog to fall over Sonny’s eyes. She wasn’t in girl’s bathroom of Tribeca Prep anymore. She was standing in an unfamiliar bathroom staring at a different version of Alex. Except, it was not like all those dreams were she was trapped inside of her own body unable to move. She was standing in a completely different bathroom staring at the Alex look alike as if it were the first time. The hatred and pain that she could see shining in her dark orbs chilled her to the bone. And then it was as if her body went onto auto pilot.
“I’m here to support a good cause.”
The words were almost silent as they fell out of her lips. As the words fell out she felt every ounce of happiness drain out of her body. She suddenly felt exhausted. She hadn’t thought it was possible to feel so much pain and yet still be alive.
“My cause,” The Alex look alike snapped angrily.
“I can’t do it anymore. I can’t keep tip toeing around everything just because you might be there. I came here to support a good cause and I don’t give a shit if you don’t like it.”
Anger consumed every fiber of her being replacing every ounce of sadness that had been filling her very soul. She clenched her fists tightly as she watched the girl before her break down in laughter. She couldn’t find a single thing about the situation that might even be remotely considered funny.
“You really have changed haven’t you?”
“You keep saying that. I’m still waiting to hear you tell me how I changed so much.”
Silence fell upon the two girls as they glared at each other.
“You went on tour and you left me. Suddenly you were tweeting everyone but me. Suddenly you were hanging out with everyone and you didn’t even look like you missed ME. Suddenly you stopped texting.”
Her anger drained away with every word the other girl spoke. She felt remorseful because she knew deep down inside that it was her fault. She had ruined them. She wasn’t entirely sure what she had ruined, but it had to have been her fault. But her body was on autopilot already and it wasn’t going to give up that easily. On the inside she was seeing her mistakes for what they truly were even if she did not know what had actually happened.
“How dare you!”
The words flew out of her mouth even though she had desperately tried to stop them. She saw a look of surprise cross the other girls face, but she couldn’t stop the word vomit that followed after.
“You don’t get the right to make assumptions Selena. You don’t get to break up with me in a voice mail, never answer my phone calls or texts to explain and still think you know what happened.”
She could feel the tears slide down her cheeks and she suddenly gave up control of her body to whoever was controlling it. Finally understanding what the situation was she had no sympathy for the girl standing before her. If that was really how the other girl had ended things then she was going to make no effort from holding herself back anymore. Not that she really had a choice anyway.
“Then explain it to me,” the Alex look alike exclaimed, “Explain to me why you stopped texting me. Why you stopped answering my calls.”
Sonny wasn’t able to hear the response her body gave as suddenly things were flickering in and out around her. One minute she was staring at the look alike Alex and her dark eyes. The next she was staring at the actual Alex, who was pressed up against a stall door, fear written across her face. Sonny could still feel her arms waving and the words spilling out of her lips no matter the situation she found herself in.
When the last words finally fell out she couldn’t even tell what was real and what wasn’t. She couldn’t even tell who she was anymore. Was she Sonny Monroe, star of the sketch comedy show or was she this mystery girl who had lost everything. Sonny fled the bathroom ignoring the calls of worry from Chad. Her surroundings flickered from being that of Tribeca Prep to being a crowded banquet hall full of faces she couldn’t recognize. Not that there was a difference between the two locations. There were people staring at her curiously in both places. Not that Sonny could tell which place was right.
She fled out of the building. One minute it was day and one minute it was night. One second she was drenched from the rain pouring down from the sky and the next second she was completely dry. She suddenly found herself in a car, not knowing if it was hers or not. She didn’t know what anything was anymore.
Up.
Down.
Left.
Right.
It was all the same as far as Sonny was concerned. She felt her entire universe splitting in half and she hadn’t the faintest idea how to put it back together. Or if she even wanted to.
