So far, Lithuania staying with America and odd-jobbing for him had been working out very well. Lithuania had done everything -- cooking, dusting, watering plants, trimming hedges, fixing cars, mending socks, hanging pictures, running errands, on and on. America was always coming to Lithuania with a new chore or job, and Lithuania was glad to help, loving to be kept busy.
Lithuania had been tidying his room when America walked in, in his pajamas, his face pale, practically shaking. Lithuania glanced towards his clock -- it was really a little late for America to be asking him to do anything.
"H-Hey, Lithuania," he said, "You wanna sleep together tonight?"
"Eh?" Lithuania looked a little surprised. "Ah, what's... wrong?"
"Um!" America looked a bit embarrassed and glanced away before answering. "Well, a movie..."
"Oh," Lithuania said in a knowing voice. "I understand." He'd heard screams (some of them had been America's) for about an hour from the room down the hall, and could only assume that America had been watching a horror movie. He grinned a little, amused that such a "tough" hero would get so scared by something that's just a movie. Even so, he didn't mind too much. America slipped into Lithuania's bed and Lithuania climbed in after him, making sure to put the nightlight on.
"Oh, I'm saved!" America said, clinging onto Lithuania's arm. "It would have been impossible for me to sleep alone tonight..." America wasn't sure what he would have done! It wouldn't be so far to make Canada drive down there, right? Probably not!
Lithuania smiled a little. "Are you always like this when you watch something scary?"
"Yeah!" America laughed a little. "When I was a kid, I would sleep with England, though. But then... he'd always fall asleep first and I would still be scared!" America's grip on Lithuania's arm tightened.
He hasn't changed a bit since he was a kid, Lithuania thought, looking on America in amusement and slight nervousness. He hadn't shared a bed with anyone in a while...
"When I was a child, I used to sleep with Poland, too," he said, suddenly.
"Oh, your former partner, right?" America asked. Lithuania flushed, a bit embarrassed that America would just say that so bluntly.
"Right... he always hogged the blankets, so we usually ended up sleeping separately..."
America looked thoughtful. "Speaking of which, why did you guys separate, anyway? You were a huge nation together, weren't you?"
"Well..." Lithuania smiled nervously. "We were partitioned by Russia..." He trailed off for a moment before quickly beginning to talk again, not wanting at all to linger on the topic of Russia. "We used to be a farming state and became big that way, but it meant we weren't really strong in war... as much as we resisted, in the end we just ended up getting hurt." Lithuania thought on it for a moment, remembering his time with Poland. It had been so nice, to have someone to rely on... someone who was so supportive, so kind. His eyes slid closed. "Now that I think about it," he murmured, "being with Poland was really fun."
"Wouldn't it be best if you were again?" America asked curiously.
Lithuania laughed a little, quietly. "If only we could."
America wasn't sure, exactly, what that meant... was someone standing in their way? Well, that wasn't right.
"I'll support you," he said, "In the name of Justice!"
"...If that day... comes again," Lithuania said, slowly, quietly. The longer he focused on his memories of Poland, the more relaxed he felt. Everything had been so simple back then, when all they had to worry about was farming, when they'd watched the flowers bloom together. "Together... in the... rye fields..."
"Huh?" America sat up in bed, suddenly. "Lithuania!" he cried, his heart beginning to panic. "Don't go to sleep by yourself!" But Lithuania didn't reply. "I'm scared by myself, Lithuania!"
Nothing. Lithuania was fast asleep.
"Lithuania!"
