I hope I'm not stepping too much outside of cannon for some folks (no pun intended), but considering gunpowder was invented in 9th century China, that seemed appropriately medieval to me!

Oh, RATS! I wanted to make the first cannon pun. Well too late for that, but I will add that in addition to making this the most interesting of tales, you need to get some praise for being a really fab writer. Your pace and humor are just a pleasure to read and I can just see it all before my eyes. This is the second classic to come our way in a month. The fandom is healthy again!

That is a surprising turn. I think gunpowder and cannons are not too much out of canon. After all even Saruman came up with it... Can't wait to see were this will lead to.

I may yet take a couple more anachronistic liberties with our inventor, but hopefully it will still fit smoothly in the scheme of things.
