[the_muses_stage] 41 - A Familiy Affair

(Set in whenitsadream, but backstory of his parents is canon and alters slightly depending on verse. Picture prompt here.)

Edie and Linus Bridges were great hunters. They were a team. They were precise. They didn't let their emotions get in the way of their job. Somewhere in that list they were parents. No one could accuse them of not loving their son, because they did. They took care of him and kept him out of danger. But they still did their job. It was what they both knew.

While their friends, the Winchesters, settled down and had kids, the Bridges kept going. They had friends all over the country, and all of them were always willing to take Devon in. Devon was used to it and adjusted to wherever he was, but there was never a day he didn't worry that they wouldn't come back for him. They took him on the road with them as much as they could without putting him in harm's way, but sometimes they just had to leave him in a better place.

That better place was often with Dean or Sam and their families. It's where Devon always begged to go, and it's where he was happiest.

Dean was the over-protective and playful father that Devon didn't get. Dean who taught him how to ride a bike, take care of cars before he could drive them, and eventually taught him to drive. Sam was the caring father he didn't get. Sam talked to him and gave him books to read. Alice and Beth were the comforting mothers. The ones that put band-aids on his scrapes, and made him eat all his vegetables. Beth was the one who picked him up off the ground when he fell, and Alice sat up with him when nightmares kept him awake. He had parents he loved, but he also had people who were his parents. He had brothers and sisters. Maddie who picked on him all the time, Angie and Rachel that were pains in his ass, James who he picked on relentlessly, and the twins who were his best friends and partners in crime.

Without the Winchesters, Devon would have been alone. He would have been alone when his parents were off hunting, and he would have been alone after the night they died.

Edie and Linus Bridges were great hunters. No one ever expected it'd be a mere human with a gun that would take them down, and the Winchesters never expected the day would come that they'd have to sit Devon down to tell him that his parents weren't coming back for him this time.
