Chapter Seventy Nine
I grab at my wife before she exits the back door to come face to face with Matilda as I say “Calliope, what’s the matter with you”. My wife realizes that everyone is staring at her and she stops suddenly. Before I can even call Theodore’s name he is standing at the back door as he looks between me and his mami and says “Have a good morning shopping ladies” as he reaches for Matilda’s hand and escorts her inside our home. Calliope turns on a dime and starts towards the couple as I stop her and say “Let’s go Calliope”. Once we are outside my wife confronts me in front of our daughters and our friends as she says “What the hell, Arizona” as our grandson says to her “That’s another dollar, Grammy”. Our son Timothy quickly grabs his son as he says “Let’s go my boy, Grammy is in no mood for jokes right now”. I open the passenger Jeep door as I nod for my wife to get in and she says “Arizona, I can drive” as I walk up to her and get in her face as I say strongly “Get your ass in this vehicle right now”. My wife sees that I am no longer playing around and that I mean business. Once everybody is safely secured in their seat belts, I drive away from our house as Teddy says “What was that all about”? I look at Teddy through the rear view mirror as Addison sees my death stare and whispers to her wife “Maybe this is not the time, honey”.
With total silence in my momma’s Jeep as the seven of us travel into the city to finish the last minute shopping before Christmas tomorrow. My momma stops at a convenience store to purchase some gas as my mami asks everyone in the Jeep if they need anything because she is going to get something to drink. The rest of us say “No” as mami exits the vehicle to go inside to pay for the gas. The minute momma and mami leave the Jeep, Elizabeth and I am pummeled with questions from our Aunts Addison, Teddy and Lexie about Theodore and Matty. As we all watch my momma’s through our windows, I give my aunts the quick version about what is going on between my brother and his former girlfriend. Before my momma’s get back into the vehicle, mami knows that I have told my aunts what is going on in the family. The five of us watch mami try to talk to momma outside the Jeep as she is finishing pumping the gas. Both of my momma’s get back into the Jeep as momma pulls the Jeep into a secluded part of the parking lot as she puts the vehicle in park as her and mami turn to face the rest of us as mami begins to apologize. The seven of us discuss this matter for the next half hour as everybody expresses their opinion about the situation until momma says “Alright then what do you say ladies that we get to some shopping”. As we all agree with my momma and make our way into the city.
Matilda and I enter our library as the rest of my family takes the children outside to give the two of us some privacy. With my hand I motion for Matty to take a seat as I say “Please sit…can I get you something to drink”? Matty sits on the leather sofa in the middle of the library as she shakes her head and says “No Ted, I am fine”. I then ask her “Why are you here today” as she hands me a Christmas bag and says “I wanted to give you your Christmas present”. I take the present out of her hand and say “Why did you get me a Christmas present. You made it perfectly clear last month that we are no longer engaged”. Matty begins to cry a bit as I hand her a box of tissues and she says “I bought the present for you last August at an estate sale. I had every intention to give it to you for Christmas. Please open it”. I open my gift as I find that Matty has bought me Josh Beckett’s rookie baseball card. I tell her thank you and do not bother telling her that I already have his rookie baseball card. I take a seat as I pull up a chair to face my former fiancé. Matty takes a minute as she says she needs to talk to me about something. After taking a deep breath Matty begins to say “I’m pregnant” as I then sit back against my chair and say “huh” because I truly did not see that coming. Matty begins to speak again as she says “I ran into Susan today and she told me that she told you about James. That is the other reason I came by today. I do not know what to do Ted. I cannot be sure if you or James is the father. I went to my doctor and she said that I am about four weeks pregnant. That is the same amount of time since I left you and began seeing James. What do I do, Ted…what do I do. My grandmother would be so ashamed of me right now. I am so glad she is not alive to see this happening”. I take Matty’s hands in mine as I say “There is a test that you can take to find out paternity but you cannot take this test until you are at least nine weeks pregnant. So you make an appointment with your OB/GYN doctor for the end of January and ask her to perform a SNP Microarray Test and this will tell you who the father is by using the blood in your bloodstream to determine the baby’s DNA. I can go with you to your appointment if you want me to so your doctor can swab my cheeks to retrieve my DNA so it can be tested to see if your baby is my baby or if the baby is James’s”.
Matty’s crying becomes worse as she says “You would do that for me, Theodore”? I wipe her tears away as I say “I would do anything for you, Matty” but as she tries to kiss me I retreat backwards to say “Why don’t we wait and see how the DNA testing goes before we confuse the situation any further”. I walk Matty outside as we hear my brothers and sisters and my nieces and nephews all still playing in the snow. I walk her to her car as I open the car door for her and she kisses my cheek as she says “I still love you, Ted” as I kiss her cheek and say “I know as I still love you. So call me when you find out when your appointment is and I will be there. Then we will figure all of this out, alright”. Matty slides into her car and says “I’ll call you as soon as I know. Have a very Merry Christmas, Ted”. I close the door to her car but not before I say “Merry Christmas to you too, Matty”. I stand in the same spot as I watch Matty’s car leave my sight as my family comes up to me to see how I am doing. My brother Tim says “You alright, Ted”? As I turn to follow his voice and see all of my family standing behind me as I say “I really do not know Tim”. Then within the next minute I say “But I will tell all of you about what just happened between me and Matty after our momma’s and our aunts return home. I do not want to discuss this in front of them” as I gesture at my nieces and nephews. Then my brother Alex says “Well then Ted, let’s begin” as I am hit in the face with a snowball from my baby brother as my nieces and nephews and the rest of my family begin slamming me with snowballs as begin to make and throw snowballs back at them as I shout “Let the old fashioned Robbins snowball fight begin”.
The seven of us pull up in front of our home as my wife and I feel something is very eerie. We have been gone for almost six hours shopping and having lunch in Boston but as we return home something does not feel right. With the Jeep turned off and as we sit in our seats for a moment, my wife and I scan our surroundings just as Addison says “Ladies, what the hell are you looking for”? My wife and I continue to look around the outside of our home and say together “Our children and our grandchildren”. Bailey and Elizabeth start to laugh as Bailey says “Momma, you don’t seriously think that the rest of our family would lie in waiting for us to arrive home just to throw snowballs at us”. My wife turns from the driver’s seat to face our daughter as she says “Isn’t that the same thing you and your brothers and sister along with my mother and father did to your mami and me when we went out for groceries about twelve or thirteen years ago”. Bailey begins to laugh as she remembers that snowball fight all those years ago. Before we all open our doors I say to every one “Keep your eyes open and don’t take anything to chance. If I know our sons and daughters, the rest of our family is lurking out there somewhere”. The seven of us exit the Jeep as we are all looking around for any sudden movement. We all quickly make our way to the rear of the vehicle as we open the back door and grab the groceries and the Christmas gifts. My wife closes the rear door slowly thinking that the rest of our family may not hear us arrive home. All of us are about to reach the front porch as I think that maybe my wife and I were wrong when an onslaught of snowballs come flying at the seven of us from our children and grandchildren on the front porch. The groceries and Christmas gifts are dropped in the snow along the way as we all try to run around the porch to get away from the snowball barrage. We all round the corner of the porch only to find that all five of our grandchildren scream in unison “Mama and Grandmamma” as they all fly off the edge of the porch and into our arms as we fall back into the snow. With all of us lying in the snow with our grandchildren on top of us as I scream “Addison Barbara, how could you”? With each of us helping each other stand back up on our feet as our children continue to laugh from their position on the front porch, Addie is first to say “Mami, although I did participate in this annual family ritual, it was not me that originally thought up this plan”. All of our children move away from our view as we see who the real culprit is as my mother-in-law is sitting on the front porch swing just smiling to her hearts content as I say “Barbara”.
Barbara Robbins looks at her family as she stands on her front porch and says to her daughter-in-law “Oh Callie, what would a Robbins Christmas holiday season be without a little snowball fight”. She smiles that dimpled smile and her ocean blue eyes that mirror my wife’s as she looks at me as she says “Who’s up for some hot chocolate” as everybody screams that they are and we all make our way into the house to get warmed up before dinner. My wife and I along with our daughters are in the parlor room wrapping the last of the grandchildren’s Christmas gifts when Theodore comes into the room. Knowing how I left things before we went shopping this morning I am the first one to say something to our son. “Theodore, is there something you wish to talk about because my actions this morning when I saw Matty at our door…” as I am trying to admit that I was hasty in my actions today our son says “I need to talk to everyone in the family but I only wish to say what I need to say only once. Can we have a family discussion after dinner tonight and before we all leave for midnight mass”? My wife is the first to answer our son as she says “Yes Theodore that will be fine. After dinner we will put the grandchildren in the playroom and you will have our undivided attention”.
With excitement and laughter filling the air during our Christmas Eve dinner as the grandchildren tell all of us about their afternoon filled with all the outdoor adventures they experienced, most of the adult eyes were on Theodore and the anticipation of the news we were about to receive. Our two daughters-in-laws, Francesca and Elizabeth, excuse themselves from the dining room table as Elizabeth says “Alright children, please follow me and your Aunt Frankie to the playroom so the rest of the grown ups can talk”. Timothy is the first to say to his wife “Baby, you don’t have to leave. You are a part of this family too”. Elizabeth takes her husband’s face in her hands as she kisses him and then says “I know that my love but tonight it is not about that…it is all about your brother”. Both Stephanie and Gabriela along with Timmy kiss their daddy’s cheek and take their mother’s hands as they all walk into the playroom. Frankie stands up as Samuel Jr. and Michelle grab a hold of her hands and says “C’mon Aunt Frankie, let’s play Mario Cart” as our future daughter-in-law kisses her fiancé and they tell each other they love each other as Francesca is pulled from the table by our grandchildren.
I move the palm of my left hand down my wife’s arm as I grasp her hand tightly as I encase my right arm around her shoulder and kiss her temple as I whisper “I love you” in her ear. My Calliope places both of her hands as she engulfs my one hand in hers as she tells me she loves me too. Our middle son Theodore asks for everyone’s attention as he begins to continue. “Matty came to our house this morning to bring me my Christmas gift that she had bought me back in August”. Theodore takes another drink of his wine as he clears his throat and my wife whispers “Oh no” as Theodore begins again. “Matty also told me something that I need to share with all of you” as now it is my turn to say “Oh no”. “I found out earlier this week from a mutual friend that Matty has been seeing someone else and his name is James. When Matty was told, by this mutual friend, that she slipped and told me about her and James, Matty felt the need to come by and explain herself. As Matty was telling me about her and her new beau, she also told me that she was pregnant. She has been to her doctor to confirm this but now she does not know what to do. By now you have all come to the same conclusion as me in thinking that her baby could be mine. Matty promised me that she will talk to her doctor about the SNP Microarray Test to confirm if I am the baby’s father or if the baby is James’s. But we have to wait at least six more weeks before the test can be performed. I am sorry about all of this drama at Christmas but I just wanted all of you to know what is going on with Matty coming over this morning”. Theodore sees all of our sullen faces after he tells us his news as he slaps his hand down on the dining room table to grab our attention back as he says “Hey…Hey…we are not going to let this news affect our Christmas. There are five children in that playroom that are looking forward to Christmas as well as the rest of us so their will be no tears shed and no sad faces. We don’t even know if this baby is mine, so for the next few days we are all going to put on our smiling, happy Robbins-Torres faces with all the dimpled cheeks and have a wonderful Christmas. In the words of Grandpa Daniel Robbins “Do I make myself perfectly clear” and in that moment we all know that our son is right by what he has said about this Christmas season as he makes his voice sound just like my father and we all raise our glasses in the air and say “To Grandpa Daniel”. With everyone helping with the clearing off the table and with the dishes, everyone begins puttering around the house to get ready for Christmas mass.
All of our thoughts of Matilda and her situation are gone from our minds as we are all enjoying the laughter and smiles from our grandchildren and each other as we celebrate Christmas morning here in Boston. With Stephanie, Gabriela and Michelle waking my wife and I up as they are jumping up and down on our bed each stating very loudly “Come on Grandmas, wake up…wake up. It’s a beautiful snowy Christmas morning and there are presents to open”. Just as Calliope and I get the girls calmed down our two grandsons come bursting through our bedroom door and just as they are about to jump on our bed too my wife puts up her hand to stop them as they both stop in their tracks and she says in a very polite voice “Children, I love you all but please don’t jump on our bed anymore. If you all go back out to the family room downstairs your grandmother and I will meet you there in ten minutes and then once everyone is awake then we can open presents”. As each child kisses my wife and me as we all exchange “Merry Christmas” to each other our grandchildren quietly make their way out of our room and to the family room as Samuel Jr. slams the door behind them. I lie back in our bed as I take a breath and enjoy the quiet. Then I feel my wife’s hand slowly slide up under my t-shirt as I say “Baby, what do you think you are doing” as my wife smirkingly says “Merry Christmas, baby”. I kiss my wife but then leave our bed as I remove my clothes along the way as my wife just stares at me as I say “Merry Christmas to you too, baby”. As I stand before her just as naked as the day I was born and say “You coming my love” as I hear her say as I smile and turn the water on in the shower “Hmmm soon…very…very soon”.
My wife and I lay all stretched out at one end of our sectional sofa as she lies on top of me and I pull a nap blanket over our bodies. We both take in the solitude of each other after the wrath that had happened only minutes before with the opening of the Christmas presents. All of our grandchildren and their parents and their aunts and uncles have made their way upstairs to play with their new Christmas electronic gadgets. My wife and I snuggle in each others arms and take advantage of the peace and quiet. I am lying on my back with my Arizona lying on my front as her head is on my chest. She is making lazy circular patterns with her fingertips on the inside of my left forearm as I am gently stoking her golden locks with a hint of gray in them. I take a deep breath and make a sudden humming sound just as her hand reaches mine and she intertwines our fingers together. My Arizona lifts her head up a bit and places her chin on my chest as she smiles that special smile I love to me as she asks “What are you thinking about, Calliope”? I always love how she calls me by my full given name as I kiss the tip of her nose and smile back at her and say “I was just wondering about something”. Arizona shifts her weight a little to settle back down in between my legs but raises herself up higher on my body so she can be closer to my face as she asks “What is it, baby”? I kiss my wife softly as I say to her “I was thinking maybe before we head to Miami we should get our hair cut shorter. We have not had short hair in since forever and I just thought it would be a nice change. What do you think”? My wife looks at me as she smiles and says “You know, I hadn’t really thought much about getting my hair cut because we always have our hair underneath our scrub caps”. As I watch the wheels in my wife’s head begin to turn as she is thinking real hard about my idea then all of a sudden my wife perks her body upwards in excitement and says “Oh…oh…oh wait… what about Beau, Samuel’s brother, maybe he could cut our hair when we get to Miami. Let’s give him a call”.
December 28th comes in a hurry with a snowstorm brewing overhead and two of our children and grandchildren joining Alex along with my wife and me on our journey from Boston to Miami as we are all on the same flight. We all try to hurry to get to the airport before the impending storm brings all air travel to a halt. With our goodbyes getting longer and longer each time we leave part of our family in Boston to travel elsewhere, my mother grows increasingly sadder and sadder after each visit when it is time to say goodbye. Even with our promise to her that we will again see her soon, I can see it in her eyes as she tries to hide her sadness. With one more kiss from my mother, part of the Robbins-Torres family heads out into the cold December morning in Boston with all of us knowing that in about five hours we will be in sunny Miami. In the midst of all of the first class seats that are filled with the whole Robbins-Torres clan, it is our grandson Samuel that has his hands on each side of my face as our foreheads are touching each other as he tells me “Grandmamma, look at me…look at me…open your eyes please and look at me”. I do what my grandson asks of me as I open my eyes and see those beautiful chocolate brown eyes of his that mirror his mother’s and grandmother’s as I hear my grandson say “Just breathe, grandmamma. Just breathe”. He then kisses my forehead and my cheeks just as the plane stops shaking as he whispers “Just breathe…I love you so much…just breathe”. I pull my little man into the biggest bear hug as I whisper in his ear “I love you too, my boy and thank you for calming me down” he just smiles and kisses me.
Alexander rides with Timothy and his family as Calliope and I take our seats in Bailey’s van as we all head to the Torres mansion. With Timothy and Bailey keeping the same housekeeping staff that has been in the Torres family since like forever, Raoul helps extract our bags from the car as he take mine and my wife’s bags to the guest house. The kitchen staff has prepared a light lunch for all of us as they kiss and hug the children hello. Calliope takes my hand as we travel around the “big house” as I like to call it as she says “I love what Bailey and Timothy have done to this place. They have kept it up very well”. As my wife and I stand out on the veranda and overlook the grounds I walk up behind her and swallow her into my arms as I say “They had great teachers in your mama and papa. I think they love the way your mama kept the grounds and that is why they look so lovely…just the way your mama liked it”. My wife turns to face me as we kiss and she holds me close. I rest my face on my wife’s chest as I can hear her heartbeat as she says “I just miss them so much. I wish my parents and your father could see how Alex is slowly becoming a man as he is trying to find his way in the world”. I kiss the flesh on the swell of my wife’s exposed breast as I then look deep into her eyes and say to her “They do see him becoming a man because you can see them in him…in his smile…in his laugh…and in his eyes…you can see all three of them plus my mother too”. Just as my wife and I kiss again our baby boy comes out on the veranda and asks us “Mamas, Bailey says she would love to take me to the university to drive me around and show me the sights and the baseball field before my interview tomorrow. Is there anyway I can convince the two of you to join us”? I see the excitement in my wife’s eyes as I say “Yes son, we would love to join you on your journey. Give us a half an hour to grab something to eat and change our clothes and your mami and I will be ready”. Our youngest son goes running through the house screaming to his older sister that we are coming and will be ready in about a half an hour. My wife just laughs at our son and for his excitement as we make a plate of food and head down to the guest house to get ready for our trip.
The campus, the dorm rooms, the outline of the university as a whole and the beautifully manicured lawn of the baseball field was breathtaking to our son Alexander. He was mesmerized from the moment we entered the gates of the University of Miami. Bailey and my wife show him all different buildings on the campus grounds as I take the hands of our grandsons, who have join us on this trip, as we follow behind the three of them walking in the Miami sunshine in our shorts, t-shirts and sandals. A far cry from early this morning when we all were bundled up in our winter clothes as we left the cold, frigid air of Boston. With a few hours behind us, Bailey receives a text from Elizabeth stating “Our husband’s have gone into their respective offices for the afternoon swearing that they will be home by six. Just getting ready to make the girl’s and me some lunch. Will the six of you be joining us”? Bailey laughs out loud and tells us about Lizzy’s text. Then Bailey says “Well, are we done for the day Alex or is there more you would like to see? I can text Lizzy back and tell her for her and the girls to go ahead and eat lunch and all of us can find a place near the university to eat”. Our son looks around at the rest of us as he says “Anybody ready to go home yet”? as our grandsons are the first to respond as they shout out loud “No” as we all just laugh for a moment as Alexander continues “Well I would like to see more of what this university has to offer. So can we find a place to eat around here beause I am famished”. With the shouts of “Pizza” and “Burgers”, Bailey drives us to a Miami landmark. From the moment she pulls into the parking lot you can smell the pizzas. My wife gasps as she asks “Bailey is this…” as our daughter smiles and says “Yes…yes it is mami”.
From the moment the six of us step out of the van, my wife begins to tell us of this place called Casolas. She talks about how when she was student going to the University of Miami how she and all of her friends loved this place. Our daughter Bailey even joins in the conversation with her mami about how great this place is and how they serve different kinds of food. Once inside this eclectic iconic restaurant you can just see how truly wonderful it really is by the diversity of people that have come to eat here. Once we are seated and I open the menu to see that they do cater to almost every taste imaginable. Our grandsons Timothy and Samuel agree to share a pizza as my wife and daughter do too but Alexander and I decide on burgers as our son gets a side of wings too. With the remnants of some Hawaiian and an every topping pizza and a few wings placed in a to go box, we all make our way out of Casolas and head back to our journey of showing Alexander the rest of the University of Miami campus. With no one around at the baseball diamond, the six of us have an imaginary game of baseball before we head home. Then we see a campus security car stop next to Bailey’s van and an officer get out of the car and walk towards us. We first hear him say “Folks you cannot be here on school grounds when school is not in session” then he looks at our daughter and says “Bailey…Bailey is that really you”? As our daughter yells at the security guard “Tyler Simpson, is that really you” as Tyler takes a hold of our daughter and squeezes her tight. When the two of them let go of each other, Bailey says “Momma, mami, Alexander, Timothy and Samuel, this is Tyler Simpson. He is…used to be a friend of your father’s, Samuel” as now our grandson moves in front of his mother to say “It’s a pleasure to meet you sir” as he holds out his hand and Tyler takes a hold of it as the two shake each other’s hands and Tyler says “No son, the pleasure is all mine”. Bailey tells Tyler goodbye as he says goodbye to the rest of us and we all make our way to the van as Bailey tosses the keys to Alexander and asks him to drive. The ride home is relatively quiet as my wife leans in from the middle seat to whisper to our daughter “Mija is there something you want to tell us”. Bailey looks back behind my wife and me as she eyes her son sitting in the third row of seats playing with his cousin as she tells my wife “Not now mami”.
At dinner later that day, the conversation seemed to flow effortlessly as our son Timothy and our son-in-law Samuel questioned our son Alex about his travels today with my wife and me along with his sister and his nephews. Alex happily answered his brother and his brother-in-laws questions about what he thought of the University of Miami. Our son Timothy says to his brother “Well Alex if you do choose the U of M we have plenty of room for you to stay right here with the rest of your family. There are probably two wings of this house that have not been occupied yet so you can take your pick of where you want to stay”. Alex pondered Timothy’s statement as he finally says “Thank you Tim and to all of you but I have not made my decision on where I am going to college as of yet but I will keep that in mind”. Then without any filter in her voice Bailey pipes up and says “Where else would you go to school. Miami has the best weather of all of your choices, you can live rent free while you go to school and didn’t I hear you say to Theodore last week that Miami has the best baseball program of the three schools are looking at, so why are you still thinking about this anyways”? That is when I strongly say “Bailey, it is his decision” and then Samuel Jr. says “Hey papa, I met a friend of yours today” and the table went silent. Samuel says “Yea buddy and who was that”? We all watch Samuel Jr. trying to think of the man’s name that he met today when our grandson Timothy says “His name was Tyler Simpson” and then Samuel Jr. says “Yea that’s his name, papa”. With one swift toss of his napkin onto his plate, Samuel left the table as Bailey calls out to him “Samuel, baby please wait” and we all watch Bailey follow him as I say “What the he..ck is going on”?
