Drudgery

Classes today were torture.

In History of Film, we started our discussion of Italian Neo-Realism. I won't bore you with the details of Italian Neo-Realism, but basically, in an attempt to better portray real life, scenes were longer, meandering, and largely uninteresting. Also, since times were hard in post-fascist Italy, it was all shot on cheap film stock that hasn't aged well. The subtitles were almost entirely washed out. And since the clips we watched were poor copies of poor copies, the audio was horrible. It sounded like a group of adults having a conversation in Charlie Brown's house. So what it boiled down to, we spent the class watching clips with subtitles I couldn't read, audio I couldn't hear, visuals that hurt the eyes to behold due to poor quality, of movies that are tedious under normal circumstances. (and I use the term 'clip,' even though some were 20 minute long chunks of these films.)

It doesn't help that the instructor simply reads her lectures from a typed copy she keeps at the podium. It's hard to take notes that way.

And I'll sum up my TV .criticism class this way: The instructor talks a lot but doesn't say much. I could zone out for minutes at a time, and not miss anything of substance. There's something to be said for conciseness

Sorry to complain so much, but yowza. Zack needs stimulation.

Oh yeah, I did indeed apply for the job at the record store.
