In the Americas exhibition now...

Northwest coast: potlatches. From Nun-Chah-Nulth and Chinook jargon meaning "to give". These were banned in Canada from 1884-1951, because the "fucking) admins and missionaries thought it "wasteful".

This is fascinating. The earliest stuff here, for the most part, is 1400s. It is far cruder, more barbaric, crazed, confusing than anything the Egyptians did millenia before them. Unbelieavable.

The Aztecs turquoise mozaics are impressive.



The Mayan statues from 400-800 BCE are more advance / well-crafted than the other bits from 1000+ years later in the Americas. Damn.
