Yesterday, I was talking to my co-worker, Kevin, on the way home from work on the bus. Somehow we got on the subject of Sagan and Hawking, and I started attempting to put into words my highly abstract way of comprehending space-time. The transition from abstract to concrete is a nearly insurmountable barrier for me so there was a lot of hand waving and saying "You know what I mean?" to Kevin's shaking head. We eventually moved on to big bang and astronomical current events, where I found that I was increasingly out of my league.
When I got off of the bus, a frumpy-but-hygienic white guy in his late 30s who'd been sitting several rows up from us (oops, apparently I'm more resonant than I think I am -blush- ) turned and said, "Hey, what you were saying about time ... we're small, and sometimes we have to make things small to understand them, and it's OK that he didn't understand you, the important thing is that you are trying to understand."
Damn, huh?
In other cool anonymous stranger news,
this comment from a stranger somewhere in California made me a bit sniffly. Thank goodness for people like Michael Franti, and frumpy-but-hygienic white guys on buses and anonymous Californians and all of you who have let go of self-imposed isolation and reconnected with humanity and done something, anything, to be the change you want to see. Scary stuff, but good. Definitely good.
