So back to that Art topic I was on about after watching Hero last week...
I didn't answer my own question. What modern art has inspired me? A lot of this may not survive 1,000 years, but I thought it was a good exercise anyway...
1. The plastic bag scene in American Beauty
2. Ascending and Descending by Escher
3. "...Walls come down, while racism peaks..." from Saigon Kick's "Love of God"
4. "I Love the World" written by New World Army and introduced to me by way of an Anacrusis remake:
The roll of distant thunder breaks
The afternoon of silence wakes
We hurry through from Petergate
As if we know this dance
With fury blind I drive at night
Across the moors the open roads
Beneath the freezing starry skies
Racing in some trance
These cities are illusions of
Some triump over Nature's laws
We've seen the iron carcass rust
And Buildings topple into dust
And as the waters rise it seems
We cling to all the rootless things
Religious lies
Technology
While spirits scream and sing

While I never said I was a clever man
I know enough to understand
That the endless leaps and forward plans
Will someday have to cease
We blind ourselves with comfort lies

To separate us from ourselves
is a power grown beyond control and a will without a face
I watch from outside

I could wash my hands of this
But we are locked together here in this bitter sweet embrace

Waiting outside for the end
Not with bitterness but an innocence
That I can't seem to grasp

5. Broken Sword's 2 words from Hero.
Those are the 5 that most immediately popped into my head. I know I've Moments with many, many other things. I'd love to be able to pinpoint what it is that I think is missing, because I don't think I've done it yet.
My greatest inspirations - lyrics, scenes in movies - probably won't last 1,000 years, which makes me wonder... how much of the truly profound art we do not have of the Minoans, the Babylonians, the Egyptians (and more modern peoples like the Greeks, Romans, etc. etc. )...
