The sound of the whirring engine echoed throughout the room. The energy level was stable. The apple was slowly but surely materializing. There was no sign of malfunction so far. It was looking good. If this kept up they might actually succeed this time.

But they had no such luck, all of a sudden; the machine coughed out a lot of smoke and stopped working altogether.

“Experiment 56, failed.” Donghae announced as he jotted it down on his notepad.

“I don’t understand it, the calculations are correct. And theoretically, our equation is correct. So why won’t the goddamn machine work?!” Kangin screamed in frustration as he kicked a nearby chair and sent it flying.

“On the bright side at least it didn’t blow up this time. That’s some progress, isn’t it?” Ryeowook said softly.

“Continue being optimistic about it. Maybe it will miraculously help us find a way to solve the problem.” Heechul rolled his eyes, fatigue taking its toll on his mood.

“Hey, you don’t have to be so mean about it.” Yesung defended. Everyone knew he was (not so) secretly in love with Ryeowook.

“Children please stop fighting. Let’s wrap up for today and go have dinner, my treat.” Leeteuk, being very mother-like, suggested.

“I want pork!” Shindong yelled, suddenly waking up from his slumber.

There was a huge debate over who wanted to eat what except Kibum who was watching them and Siwon who wasn’t very fussy about foo. Finally, Leeteuk announced that he didn’t have enough money and they decided to have home cooked Beijing Fried Rice instead, courtesy of Heechul’s China boyfriend.

“Oh I don’t think I’ll be joining you guys tonight.” Donghae announced, remembering he had made an appointment earlier.

“Let me guess, Eunhyuk?” Leeteuk asked and Donghae nodded, “I swear he’s stealing you from us. Make sure you join us next time.”

Leeteuk turned his attention to Kyuhyun. “You coming?”

Kyuhyun shook his head. “I’m going to stay awhile. See if I can figure anything out.” Leeteuk nodded. Ever since the death of his boyfriend something about Kyuhyun has changed. He became so quiet and antisocial that even Kibum talked more than he did.

When Leeteuk left, Kyuhyun proceeded to check and double check the calculations, again he could find nothing wrong. He looked at the equations, nothing seemed to be wrong. He looked at the machine for defects, it looked fine. Maybe he too should wrap up for the night. He stared at the blueprint one more time and something in his mind clicked.

He tweaked some of the wires and readjusted some of the circuit boards. After he had modified to his heart’s content, he stood at the door and admired his work. This time it will work for sure. He walked to the platform and pressed the button, the machine roared to life for the second time that night.

“Damn the rain!” Heechul scolded the weather as the group all waited patiently for their ride. “Now we have to wait.”

“Well we wouldn’t be waiting if we had left earlier and we would have left earlier if you didn’t take so long in the bathroom!” Yesung retorted.

Heechul opened his mouth to argue back but was stopped. “Guys, quiet. Do you hear that? Sounds like our machine is running.” Kibum said, one of the few times he used his voice.

“Our machine… Crap, Kyuhyun!” Leeteuk rushed back in the laboratory followed by the rest of the group. They arrived at the door just in time to see Kyuhyun disappear.

They immediately ran towards the machine where Kyuhyun had previously stood. He wasn’t there.

“I can’t believe it.” Ryeowook gasped, gaining the attention of the others, “It worked, the machine…worked.” Everyone’s jaw dropped as they looked at the blinking blue light that appeared on the screen. Kyuhyun wasn’t in their dimension any more.

~

Kyuhyun had no idea where he was. All he could see was white. He felt like he was dropping down a white tube with no end in sight. Does this mean he succeeded? Or was he simply in a dimension void. A hollow space between two dimensions that is void of time. He didn’t know and honestly, he didn’t care.

Not long after, two figures appeared. He recognized them immediately. It was his father and himself, fourteen years ago, when his father still had hair and he was still an eight year old child who caught bugs in his spare time.

“Papa, what are you doing?” He heard his younger self ask.

“I’m studying.” The man said lifting his son up and placing him on his lap so he could see all the numbers that made no sense to him.

“What are you studying?” The boy asked again.

The man scratched his chin. “I’m studying alternate dimensions.”

The little boy looked more confused than ever. “What’s an alternate dimension?”

“It’s where the cartoon characters live.” The man lied while the boy nodded in realization. Kyuhyun laughed. He can’t believe he bought that explanation when he was younger. The figures disappeared after that and in their place, another one appeared.

It was one of a boy in his twenties. Kyuhyun couldn’t believe his eyes. “Good morning how was your sleep?” The boy asked. Kyuhyun gulped.

“Breakfast is on the table. I made your favorite. Ah, I have to leave now, I’m late for work.” The boy walked towards the door.

“No Sungmin, you’ll die if you walk out now!” Kyuhyun screamed but the boy couldn’t hear him. He reached for his hand but he went right through him. The boy opens the door and Kyuhyun knows what happens next.

Three gunshots were heard and the boy fell, blood seeping out of his wounds. Kyuhyun tried his best to fight the fresh batch of tears that threatened to fall. He already promised not to cry but it was just too much to watch someone you love die in front of your eyes, twice.

The scene vanished and Kyuhyun found himself being very sleepy for some unknown reason. He fought it awhile but in the end, resigned and drifted off to sleep.

~

Kyuhyun woke up to people screaming. He rubbed his eyes as he peeled himself off the bench. Bench? He looked around. Everywhere people were rushing for the train. ‘I must be at the station.’ He looked around some more. It looks like he was still in Korea given the text in which the signboards were written in.

From somewhere someone threw him a coin. “Be well and may god bless you.” The man called out before the train doors closed. Kyuhyun laughed to himself, he really did look like a homeless man on the street.

“Hey are you ok? You’ve been there sleeping there for a long time.” A voice snapped him out of his thoughts. Kyuhyun’s eyes widened when he saw the person in front of him.

“Min hyung?” he stood up and hugged the man before he could stop himself.

“Excuse me what? Hey! Could you let go?” the man hit his shoulder hard bringing Kyuhyun back to reality.

~

“I’m sorry about earlier, it’s just that you look a lot like my friend and he’s… not alive anymore.” Kyuhyun apologized while they were waiting for their coffee at a café.

“It’s ok. If it isn’t too much, what’s your friend’s name?”

“Sungmin.”

“Oh he has the same name as me!”

“What a coincidence.” Kyuhyun tried to understand how someone could look exactly like someone else and then he remembered. It would seem that the dimension-travel machine made worked.

“What’s he like?” Sungmin asked taking a sip of his latte.

Kyuhyun began with his appearance then proceeded to his habits and ended with his likes and dislikes. Sungmin swore he talked more than his socialite sister did. Kyuhyun hadn’t realised that the sun was already beginning to set and Sungmin hadn’t once stopped him from talking. In the end they were chased out by the shop owner who was complaining about it being way past closing time.

Kyuhyun was embarrassed. Sungmin was laughing. “Better keep track of time next time. Say, I’ll give you a lift. Where do you stay?”

Kyuhyun stopped. That’s right, in this dimension, he doesn’t have a home, well he probably did but he just doesn’t know where it is. “Oh right, that’s why you were sleeping in the train station. No worries, you can stay at my place.”

“Are you sure?”

“No problem, now hurry up and get in the car.”

~

Sungmin’s house was a small apartment on the outskirts of the city. There were two rooms, a kitchen, a bathroom and a living room. Every inch of the apartment was painted a pink, just like what Sungmin would have done.

“It’s pretty messy but you can have this room. The kitchen is that way in case you want midnight snacks and the bathroom is that way for when you need to pee or you know stuff. Well what’s mine is yours so feel free to use whatever.”

“Are you always this nice? I could be a serial killer or a thief you know.”

“With that scrawny figure, I don’t think so. Besides, its fine, I just felt like helping you since you looked so pathetic.” Sungmin mocked in a teasing manner.

Kyuhyun turned to look at the room he had been given. It was literally carpeted with stuffed rabbits, mostly pink ones, and he had to crawl his way to the bed on the other side of the room.

~

Kyuhyun stared at the cat that was meowing at his feet. “I named it Sen isn’t it cute? I found it wandering aimlessly around the alley way so I brought it home. I seem to be bringing lots of lost things home lately.”

Kyuhyun just continued staring at the cat while it looked up at him. He bent down slightly and pet it on the head. The cat purred. “I think it likes you. That’s a relief.”

“Are you implying something?”

“No not at all. Oh by the way, let’s go shopping today!”

“What for?”

Sungmin rolled his eyes. “To get Sen supplies and such.”

Just like that Kyuhyun was dragged to a pet store somewhere in Seoul to look for cat necessities for Sen. “We’ll need food, a scratching post, a litter box, some toys. Do you think we’ll need a cage?”

“Probably.” Kyuhyun answered dryly since he had no idea what a cat would need.

Sungmin nodded and made his way to the food department to pick out cat food. Once he was done shopping, which meant filling up five baskets and taking more than two hours, they went to the cashier.

Kyuhyun gasped when he saw the cashier. “Heechul?”

“How did you know my name?” he questioned. Kyuhyun thought fast and pointed to the nametag on Heechul’s uniform. “Oh.”

Then just when he thought he wouldn’t find any of his other friends, Donghae came bouncing in. “Yo Hae, the fish food came in last night. How’s Henry doing?”

“Henry and Zhoumi are having babies! Me and hyukkie are gonna have babies too!”

“You can’t do that. You’re both guys. I mean if guys could have babies together, I’d have a child with Hannie by now.”

“But Henry and Zhoumi are guys too.”

“They’re fishes. One of them is definitely a girl; you just gave it a guy name.”

‘Looks like Eunhae is still Eunhae in this dimension. Hanchul too.’

Kyuhyun and Sungmin walked out as soon as Heechul gave them their change. “That was amusing. Oh, I know a really good bakery around here. Wanna try some of their bread?”

As soon as Kyuhyun nodded, he was dragged down rows of shops until Sungmin finally stopped in front of the last one.

“One pumpkin bun please.” Sungmin called as he stepped inside.

“Sungmin, long time no see! Ah, I see you’ve brought a friend.” A plump man looked up from stacking bread. ‘Shindong.’

“Shindong this is Kyuhyun. Kyuhyun, Shindong.” Sungmin introduced both of them.

“Nice to meet you.” Shindong extended his hand coated in flour but Kyuhyun shook it anyways. “What would you like?”

“Just a chocolate bun please.”

~

Happy birthday to you.
Happy birthday to you.
Happy birthday to Sungmin.
Happy Birthday to you.

“But I never told you my birthday was today.” Sungmin said taking the bunny Kyuhyun had given him as a birthday present.

“It was marked on your calendar.”

“Gee thanks Kyu.”

Kyuhyun smiled and offered him a slice of the birthday cake. “I bought this at Shindong’s. Pumpkin flavor.”

Sungmin smiled and took the plate from him. “Oh I almost forgot, we have to give some to Sen too.” Sungmin leaned over to cut out a slice of the cake. As he was coming back to his original position, Sen thought it would be fun to push its owner there and then causing Sungmin to fall on top of Kyuhyun, lips touching each other’s.

For Kyuhyun, it felt exactly the same as before and oh how much he missed this feeling, how he wished it would never stop. Not even when Sungmin broke the ‘kiss’, cheeks red from the contact. Kyuhyun simply pulled him back down for another round.

“Kyu? I don’t think-“ Sungmin never got a chance to finish whatever he had wanted to say when Kyuhyun pushed him onto the bed. He didn’t even remember when he stood up and walked to the bed for crying out loud.

And that night, the cake was never given to Sen.

~

“Another three people have gone missing tod-“ Sungmin turned off the TV before the news reporter finished. Recently, the news had been filled with nothing but depressing things. Missing people, natural disasters and other things of the sort.

“What’s happening to the world?” He asked and Kyuhyun shrugged. But even if he pretended not to, he knew. When he crossed over to another dimension, he made them overlap resulting in a gap. He was willing to bet the same thing was happening back in the dimension he came from.

“I wish this would stop soon.” Sungmin sighed. Kyuhyun looked at him. He didn’t really want this to happen either but if he left now that means that Sungmin won’t be with him anymore and Kyuhyun doesn’t want that. Especially not after he found Sungmin again.

If being with Sungmin meant that the whole world would be destroyed, then so be it.

“Min, what if I told you that I was the cause of all these bizarre things happening on the news?”

“I told you StarCraft was driving you insane.” Sungmin started. “But if you really are, I’d make you stop.”

Kyuhyun looked down. It still wasn’t enough to make him change his mind.

~

It had been months since Kyuhyun came to this dimension and everyday more and more people were mysteriously disappearing. They could be doing anything, running, cooking, anything. One minute they are there, the next the just vanish into thin air leaving people around them dumbfounded.

Sungmin was poking at his breakfast. “I heard Minho from next door went missing. Taemin has been frantic ever since.” Kyuhyun nodded.

“I also heard Aunt Key disappeared.” Again, Kyuhyun nodded as Sungmin continued listing the people whom he had known. They never ate breakfast that morning.

That afternoon, Kyuhyun decided it was time to go back. He went to the library and borrowed books on theoretical physics. He locked himself in his room as he tried to remember as much as he could of the equations they had written earlier. Even if this would mean leaving Sungmin, it would be worth it.

~

“Sungmin I have something to show you.” Sungmin looked up. After locking himself in the room for weeks Kyuhyun had finally came out.

“What is this?” Sungmin asked poking at the machine that Kyuhyun had spent weeks building.

“Do you know what alternate dimensions are?” Sungmin shook his head. “It’s a place where another me lives, with a different personality, a different life, a different timeline. This machine will let me cross from one dimension to another."

“That’s so cool! You could win a Nobel Prize or something.”

“No its not. When someone crosses the border, the dimensions overlap which brings about much chaos such as natural disasters.”

Sungmin stared at Kyuhyun, a part of him knows what Kyuhyun’s going to say next and another part of him doesn’t want to hear it. “You-“

“I must go back to the dimension from which I came. It was nice knowing you.” Kyuhyun walked to the platform but Sungmin stopped him. He doesn’t really know why, he wanted the chaos to stop but he didn’t want to let Kyuhyun go, not yet.

“Min, remember when I told you that you look like my friend. It was partially true. You were my friend in my dimension, my boyfriend in fact. You are dead there and I’m really happy to be able to meet you here but now I have to go.” Kyuhyun pulled Sungmin’s hand off his clothes.

Kyuhyun took one last look at the pink room he had grown to love, at the carpet of stuffed toys, the table where he worked and finally at the person standing in the middle. “Bye bye Min. I love you.” He pressed the button and the machine started.

Sungmin let a few tears fall as he watched Kyuhyun vanish. “I love you too.” He said but the machine drowned out his voice. Finally, the machine stopped and Kyuhyun was no longer there. He heard the TV announce the sudden reappearance of the missing people. He heard Taemin scream from next door, Minho was back, he presumed.

But honestly he didn’t care.

~

Heechul drummed his fingers impatiently trying to figure out what Kyuhyun did to make the machine work. “Why’d that damn kid have to be so damn smart?!” He threw his hands up in frustration.

“It’s just that you’re dumb.” Yesung answered.

“I don’t see you figuring out what Kyuhyun did.” Heechul answered back.

Yesung was going to say something clever when Ryeowook tugged at his sleeve. “What is it Wookie?” Ryeowook merely pointed to the screen and Yesung soon saw what Ryeowook meant. The blinking blue dot on the screen had disappeared.

Out of the blue, Kyuhyun materialized from nowhere much to the amazement of the eleven others in the room.

Leeteuk was the first to react. “My baby, do you know worried I’ve been.” He grabbed Kyuhyun in a bone crushing hug. Soon everyone was gathered around Kyuhyun showering him with questions.

“Did anything weird happen here when I was gone? Natural disasters maybe.” Kyuhyun asked.

“Yeah people were disappearing. It was pretty weird shit and Donghae wouldn’t shut up about aliens.”

“You know what; I don’t think we should continue this research. The overlapping dimensions will create a bigger problem.” Kyuhyun stated.

“Then what should we do?”

“Maybe Leeteuk hyung could be a hairstylist. He was a hairstylist in the other dimension.”

Everyone burst out laughing. For the next few hours Kyuhyun told them about what they did in the other dimension and laughed late into the night.

Kyuhyun never told the rest about meeting Sungmin again though. But he hoped that whatever he was doing, Sungmin was doing well.

~

Sungmin was sitting in the waiting room. His sister had insisted that he visited the hospital because he was having a slight cough. Damn Sunny overreacted way too goddamn much sometimes.

“Lee Sungmin.” The nurse called signaling his turn to see the doctor. Sungmin got up hesitantly, he never liked going to doctors. He opened the door and stopped dead in his tracks.

“Kyuhyun?”

Note (1): This is a happy ending
