Let me see if I can do this right. Here I go, I'm going to summarize this the Sarah Connor way!

An entire palace in Egypt was massacred 3000 years ago. The pharaoh who survived it called it betrayal. He lived ( Read more... )

Historically the Hyksos were frequent enemies of the ancient Egyptians thus why I have decided they make appropriate adversaries in this story. I don't know what story you're talking about so I can't comment on that. Only be assured they aren't the real villians. Any expansion on the Hyksos will be done with research done first and I will name my sources in author's notes when and if I do. Any historical errors made will be my own, will be corrected and the person who pointed them out to me thanked (as long as they give me proof and a source to verify it against). I want to be historically accurate as possible ( ... )

I have a lot of the same problems writing Yuugi that you do. I do better with more conflicted, darker, even more "evil" characters and I'm all right writing women of all personalities and types. What I think a lot of writers who write Yuugi tend to do is they make Yuugi act and speak TOO much like a woman. They "feminize" him more than he needs to be. As for the rest of what you said, I agree too. A gentle personality type is usually seen by most as being weak because men are "supposed to be" strong and manly all the time. Most don't realize being manly doesn't always have to involve being stoic and macho.

It's not uncommon that a writer feels such a connection with a character, that character starts to reflect their state of mind and personality, rather than the character the way they were originally written. I've always believed the saying that an author is just a lot of different people occupying one body and one mind. Even with the characters I haven't created, I start seeing myself through them and within them. The important thing is not to lose perspective. You have to keep going back to that template i.e. Would Yuugi do this? Would Yuugi say this? Would Yuugi think this? Yuugi is a boy and as such has mostly acted like a typical boy. He has a sweet personality, he's sensitive, but he has proven while he can shed a few tears drawing a card that seals the fate of someone he loves, he is not a weak young man. Yuugi is in touch with his feminine side (if you call being in touch with his emotions a feminine characteristic) BUT he's also very much in touch with his actual physical gender. ;)
