That article did get one thing right.

Nino was moving out of his mother’s home and into a new apartment.

It was quiet, in a small area of Tokyo known as Chidori-cho. The people were friendly, and the neighborhood was pleasant. A perfect place to start a life, and eventually, a family.

The move was easy, what with his roommate’s mother offering to hire a moving service for them. He himself thought it a waste. His SUV could transport their items in a few trips, but she’d insisted.

The first night, they’d gotten cold soba from the local konbini, sitting in a bare living room, boxes piled up high against the walls. The silence was calming, far different from their daily lives of noise and hustle.

They slept on separate futons that night, but by morning one was wrapped around the other.

The next day they went and bought a futon for two.

Due to his tidy ways, the apartment was set up and homey, their personal effects decorating every surface he could find. Most of them were his roommate’s work, little clay figures, some abstract, some representing different aspects of the life they shared, both work and what went well beyond.

During their days off, they would wander the small town, going into little shops, barely saying a word. During one of those trips they found a small black kitten, one white paw dirty from living on the street. He relented when his roommate pointed to the building storm clouds and “Kitten” became a part of their little home.

They had a housewarming party a week after moving in. It ended with a lump of five bodies, passed out on their living room floor from too much sake, and a content little Kitten asleep on the pile.

Their mother’s visited often, his roommate’s more than his. But that was to be expected. Despite his own cooking prowess, they had home cooked meals waiting on the stove every day when they’d get home from work, with little notes attached proclaiming the love of a mother for her sons. Nino had long been adopted into his roommate’s family, after all.

It was the night after they’d moved in that Nino really started to consider the little apartment home. Coming in late after a long day of filming the drama, he found Ohno waiting up for him, two plates of homemade soba waiting for them, and a soft “Okaeri” on his lips.

For the first time in his life, Nino truly felt that his replying “Tadaima” was sincere.
