As for other paths...I certainly didn't think the way I do now when I was 18. Not many people do - some of us have to lose our innocence first. ;} I'm sure that's not truly fair - you were probably innocent once too...but I didn't know you when you were 5. ;}
All kidding aside you went through some real-life shit when you were far younger than I was by the time I had similar experiences (going to college at 16 springs to mind first). I was young, raised with a singular focus to beliefs, searching for my own identity, and very idealistic when we met. I don't use that as an excuse, it's just the way I was. I grew and changed according to my surroundings just as everyone does. It does make me nostalgic sometimes and occasionally I can still see the boy I was in the man that looks back at me from the mirror. All in all, however, I wouldn't trade my experience and growth for all the proverbial tea in China. It has made me who I am - and I like him. :}
