So, I attended the
Anime Trailer Park* panel at
Swancon this year, and heard a lot of recommendations for good series to watch.
I don't remember everything that was suggested during the panel. (As
matociquala has commented, being at a Con is a lot like being drunk.) Two that did stand out, though, were
Spice and Wolf/Ookami to Koushinryou and
Planetes.
As it happened, some time over the weeks leading up to/including Swancon, in my slightly surprisingly random handing around of my portable HDDs I had picked up a copy of the nearly complete run of Spice and Wolf. I finished watching the 12 episodes I had last night, downloaded the DVD only 'bonus' episode (that fits in the middle)overnight and watched it tonight. *happy sigh*
It's a slow, lyrical and utter beautiful show. I'm definitely going to have to get my hands on the high quality versions, as the DVD only episode is completely gorgeous. The opening theme, Tabi no Tochuu is particularly haunting, in a very good way.
Next up, I'm going to watch Planetes, which also got great reviews, and caught my attention when it was claimed to be the only SF anime to get near-Earth space and micro-gravity right. Looking forward to it.
(*) Mis-named, really, 'cause unlike the standard version of
Trailer Park, this was more a list of good series that had come out in the past year or so, rather than 'Let's look at the trailers for movies coming out over the next 12 months'. I don't think it'd work any other way, though, what with anime OAVs and serieseseses being totally different containers of piscines to Hollywood movies. (And thank the gods for it.)
