... Rukia and Ichigo are quits; Ichigo saved Rukia not only for that MAJOR EPIC one time, but at least thrice. Rukia... I don't know. At least thrice? They had both saved each other's life-afters, too. What do I mean exactly?

If Ichigo hadn't spoken to Byakuya at that time, hadn't given his onii-san speech, it could be that Rukia would still be living in pugatory back at the Kuchiki manor. (Or worse still, her Nii-sama hadn't made the move to shield her from Evil!Gin, and that would've been the end of her. ) I believe that it was Ichigo who'd managed to scald Kuchiki-sama out of his 'I-am-duty-bound-to-the-clan-I-cannot-break-rules-third-time-is-not-lucky' ice-block state, to make him see sense. (I know that others have their own opinions on this, and also that the following reasoning applies only to the most dire situations.)

There isn't a point in keeping a promise to the dead when the it's the living that's at stake. However desperate you were to hold on to the promises made on the grave/atlars of your honoured late parents, please remember the other promise you'd made to someone more freshly dead, at the very least. Kinship counts, yo. Especially when they're so rare, so precious... I'm sure that you'd considered the fact that should Rukia die, you're more or less left in a house consisting mostly of blithering, we-care-for-you-only-'cause-you're-taichou#1-and-it's-to-our-adavantages rotten elders. Meh. What a sorry life that would be for you unless ByaChiru truly becomes canon XD.

Rukia... well, while I don't know what her meeting of Ichigo means for his imminent afterlife, it is significant enough that she had been the trigger for Ichigo to gain his shinigami power. That alone saved his entire family, saved his mortal life, and gave him the very basis for his current I WANNA BE THE BEST NAKAMA-campaign.

Bunnisteffi shall go catch her Zzzzzs... now...
