Portrait practice

In an act of alarming hubris, I offered to make art for both the Fandom Trumps Hate and Fandom For Australia (bushfires) auctions. The idea is that people bid like in a conventional auction, only the winning bidder makes a donation to one of a list of approved charities rather than a payment, and then receives... something.  In my case, a photo of ( Read more... )

Wait, they want you to PAY just to have your art CONSIDERED??? That's...that's a whole different level of precious.

It is, a bit, isn't it. Good point. I think I'm going to skip that one and put stuff into other exhibitions that feel rather lower-stakes!

I think it was Eleanor Roosevelt who said you should do the thing that frightens you and submitting a painting for 'consideration' seems like a very good (and terrifying) place to start. If you need to go and retrieve it, you can always wear a hat and sunglasses!

My acid test for fanart is 'did I recognise the character before I read the blurb'. Applying it to this, yes they more than pass (and I am a huge Good Omens fan so if I thought your portraits sucked, I'd just shut up). Aziraphale looks - worried.

I'm delighted to hear they are recognisable!

I've looked again at the list of places I could exhibit, and decided that I don't have to do it all at once. There's an exhibition coming up that's closer to get to and where I won't have to run the gauntlet of 'selection' so I think I'm going to do that first. If I actually sell something there, I'll feel encouraged to take the next step!

Just send your husband to pick up the rejected stuff.

Heh. Nah, I think I'm just going to skip that one and exhibit in places where I know they want my stuff to begin with. One step at a time!

Quite risk-averse you are, aren't you haha?

Hmm, not something I have had often said about me at all! :-D

I think because it's basically a hobby that I am trying to get good at/ get validation for, rather than a career exactly, I'm being a bit more laid-back about not having to approach it at 1000 miles an hour than some things I've done in the past.

The Good Omens angels are very recognizable and look as if they might be a bit worried about the bushfires.
I think it's great that you're making art for those auctions.

I suppose the £5 might partly be to stop the selectors from being totally swamped, because the community centre wall is limited in size and not infinitely extendable? Or it's a fund-raising ploy... It does sound a little tactless, though!

Yes, partly to stop them being swamped and also so they can avoid having to display thing created with more enthusiasm than skill, I suppose. But I think I'm going to back off that exhibition and go for something a bit more local and friendly to start with!
