For those of you who don't know, I have two florescent lights in my room with tons of plants underneath. I've had this going for about 2 years now (kind of 3), and it's become a fixture of my room.
I just went over to look at my plants and noticed a weird yellowish color on the top of my compost bin/trash can. I leaned in closer and saw that they were insects. Scale insects. Covering my trash can.
Scale is a plant death sentence. Either the plant goes away or you spend a lot of time trying to kill the scale off, and once a plant has been infected, you can never really be sure that it's cured.
I looked at the humidifier the trash can was on. Scale insects everywhere.
I looked at the floor around the trash can. Scale insects.
I looked at the black wire frame holding some of my plants. Saw one crawl by.
I looked at my little magnolia tree--the one I've been babying from seed for a year and a half--and smashed a scale insect on it.
Every single one of my 45 plants has scale.
