There will be other days. Today is half-marathon day, it's sunny and 16 degrees. Perfect, after these last icy months. And I'm not running. On Thursday evening I had a fine half-hour run, which, multiplying by four, would have brought me home just inside two hours. But on Friday I had a temperature, headache, and muscle aches in my legs so that I couldn't wait to get into bed at six o'clock. Today I still have a bit of a temperature, and a nasty cough. I'd struggle to run five kilometres, never mind 21. I may still head into town to watch the finish.
Why do I run? Not just to get to the end in a certain time. There's a bigger picture, of exercise and being outdoors and enjoying life. On Tuesday we fly to Australia to spend time with relatives and friends. That's more important than any run.
