Greetings, Wolfram. I am Handmaiden. As has been said, there was an organized evacuation before the bulk of the ants arrived. There are a few people who remained in the tree, as the ants did not pose a serious threat to them, but the rest of the population is safe.

What made them so special?

They are not Human, are not of interest to the ants, or possess some form of strength or power that allows them to combat them without great risk. And some of did eventually come to this place regardless.

I do not know all of them personally, so I cannot answer that with certainty. However, there is a variety of sentient species in Edensphere.
