well, Canada had an election on Tuesday, and it's more o' the same. Harper and his conservatives have a minority, the liberals fell, the ndp rose, and the greens didn't get anyone elected.

my local green candidate did really well, getting 12,456 votes, compared to the 18,977 achieved by the winning liberal candidate. The conservative placed second (the part i find hardest to believe) with 17,185 votes. So it was
liberals 32.2 %
conservatives 29.2 %
greens 21.1 %
and
ndp 16.5 %, with 9,709 votes.

I'm trying to figure out how and why people vote conservative, and who they are. I've found one book that i need to check out, called "Anatomy of a Liberal Victory" which totally dissects the 2000 Canadian general election. Unfortunately, the parties were a bit different, as there was both the alliance and a conservative party, and the greens weren't a major player back then.

It still drives me nuts that in our system, 66% of people can vote for someone else, and the person getting 32% is still considered the winner.

rl, election
