Winter was his favorite time of year. The snow, he enjoys most of all. Each time the beautiful weather girl reported that there was a chance of snow he would smile happily and get his camera ready for wintery shots.

Each year at Christmas he went to the same jewelry store and picked up a specially engraved necklace he had ordered 8 months in advance just to ensure he would get it on time. They always told him that ordering that far ahead wasn’t necessary but he would just smile at them and hand over his credit card.

On Christmas Eve he would exchange presents with his beloved Koyama, they’d smile and kiss before heading off to the annual Christmas party one of their friends held each year.

This year however would be different, different because Shige was no longer speaking with Koyama. They fought, about what Shige doesn’t remember, or rather he choose not to remember because of how stupid the reason for their fight is.

Because it was a habit he still went to that jewelry store to pick up the new necklace, which he would just shove into the back of the closet as soon as he returned home (Koyama was currently staying with their mutual friends Kusano and Uchi. Shige wasn’t speaking to either of them either.) and forget it was even there. As he was turning to leave, after quietly thanking the same smiling old man that he always ordered the necklace from, he bumped into someone.

“Hello, Merry Christmas to you Kato Shigeaki.”

“Ohkura?” Shige asked, looking up to confirm it was indeed Ohkura.

“Who else? I’m here picking up Uchi’s Christmas present for his mother. He would’ve come himself but..”

“With that drama he’s doing he doesn’t have time. He asked me to do it but I not so nicely told him to fuck off. I was forced to run all the way into the middle of Tokyo and hide in the apartment where one of my juniors from high school lives so Ryo wouldn’t track me down and beat me up.”

“Oh now this I must hear. Let me pick up the present and we’ll go. I’m eating lunch with Taguchi today so you can join us.” Shige glared at Ohkura’s back. He wasn’t speaking to any of his friends. It wasn’t their fault, but he knew that Koyama needed them more than he did.

Ohkura dragged Shige across the street, down about 5 blocks and into a small hidden away Thai restaurant. “Ah, you brought Shige with you. Don’t worry Shige I won’t tell anyone from our high school that I saw you today.”

Shige almost wanted to hug Junno. He didn’t cause that would be weird.

“So tell me Shige, why exactly did you tell Uchi to fuck off? You know doing that’s worse than death because of what Ryo could do to you. Not to mention what the rest of my friends might do to you. Hina may look sweet but he’ll cut you’re…”

“MEATBALLS! I SHOULD ORDER SOME AND SEND KOICHI-KUN FROM THE OFFICE A PICTURE!”

Shige raised an eyebrow. “I don’t even want to know why he’s going to send his boss a picture of meatballs.” He craned his neck to look at the window all the way across the restaurant, it was snowing.

“….anyways as I was saying, why…hey are you listening? Shige-chan!~” Something warm and wet brushed itself across Shige’s cheek and he nearly fell out of his chair trying to get away.

“Relax. It was just some noodles, it’s not like it was my tongue. Not unless you..”

“No thank you.”

“I wouldn’t mind you running your tongue across my cheek Ohkura.”

Junno was ignored and Ohkura proceeded to pry information out of Shige, who by the end of the conversation was wishing he could just shoot himself in the foot, because it would be way better than an interrogation about himself love life and friendship with Uchi by one Ohkura Tadayoshi.

“Wow, I can’t believe you two fought over who had to wipe snow off the windshield of your car. That’s really lame. And even stupider than some of the things some of my bandmates fight about. And we fight about some really stupid things.”

“Its not….wait yes it is. And don’t ever say that in the form of a pun again. Otherwise I’ll knock your ass halfway across the room and you’ll be butt ass naked by the time you get there.”

“……”

“Ok. I’m telling Ryo not to let you watch anymore Yakuza movies when you’re up all night studying.”

“I keep telling him it was for a project. It’s not my fault he got me drunk before I watched the movies. I just….god I feel so stupid right now. I argued with Koyama over who had to wipe snow off the windshield. I would apologize to him but I kinda deleted his phone number in a fit of rage. And you know, to be honest…I don’t care. I don’t care anymore. I’m tired of paying so damn much money for a stupid gift he never even wears. I’m going home. I need to finish filling out some papers so I can transfer to a sister college in South Korea for a while.”

Shige bolted, pushing past the waitress. Winter was his favorite time of year. The snow, he enjoys most of all. He heard it was especially beautiful in South Korea, maybe he’d get over his petty, childish anger after spending a few months there.

No one was able to stop him from going, they tried tracking flights, but he kept changing them. He left in the middle of the night, leaving a larger gift wrapped package at the front door of the Koyama family ramen restaurant. Enclosed was the necklace, and a photo album entirely of wintery pictures.
