Coallition 2004 election campaign:
Howard: "I promise to keep interest rates down"
Interest rates have risen 4 times since this 'promise'.
Now:
Howard: "The reserve bank sets interest rates. We have nothing to do with them".
Coallition 2007 election campaign:
Howard: "You can trust us".
Even Janette Howard, in the latest iography about the man, admits he is "not into giving firm committments".
How can you trust a man whos wife doesn't trust a word that comes out of his mouth? The man who invented retrospective 'non-core' promises; i.e. a promise made during election time that he openly admits afterwards he had no intention of keeping.
Here are some examples:
- There will be no GST
- Keeping interest rates down
- Weapons of mass destruction in Iraq (remember the 'irrefutable' proof?)
- Hand over to Peter Costello
- No 'battler' would be worse off under him
- Our troops would only be in Iraq for 6 months
- We have no commitment to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions
- Climate change doesn't exist
- Medicare will be retained fully (the dental plan was removed, and bulk billing has reduced by 12%)
- In 2001, Howard promised his government would reduce health insurance premiums (they've increased 21% since then)
- Howard said, and I quote "I can guarantee we're not going to have $100,000 university degree courses". There are now 16 degrees costing over $100,000
- Again, another quote: "I want to re-state the assurances I have previously given . . . nobody's benefit will be cut as a result of changes to the social security system". The truth? In the 2002 Federal Budget the Howard Government announced that it would
cut the pensions of 200,000 people with disabilities, and last year he cut the
allowances of 30,000 parents caring for children with a disability.
There are many, many more, however a) I think I'll be lucky if you got this far, and b) they need a bit of a back story.
But please, next time someone says that they don't think Howard's done such a bad job, ask them this: If your partner lied to you as often as Howard has, would you still be with them?
