Mom Punishes Bullying Daughter with Ugly Clothes for School
I got this story originally from booju_newju while I was reading entries from other communities on LJ's homepage.
When a Mom in Murray, Utah found out that her 4th-grade daughter had been bullying another child about her clothes, she came up with a particularly apt form of punishment. She decided to send her own daughter to school in ugly outfits that look like rejects from Little House on the Prairie.
The punishment included two different outfits that her daughter had to wear on two different days in a row. You might think it was a bit harsh, but it worked. The child heard other kids picking on her behind her back and told her Mom she wouldn’t do it anymore “because it’s stupid and it’s mean. It hurts them.” Well done, Mom.
While I'm glad the girl learned her lesson, I'm not happy by the method she learned it. If you have a kid that's bullying others, doing things to them (making them wear certain clothes, act a certain way) that will make them become a target to bullies ISN'T GOING TO SOLVE SHIT. What you're doing is just making your kid into a bullied victim rather than sit their butt down and talk to them about why they make fun of someone about their clothes (or whatever they're making fun about someone), which could lead to a serious discussion and actually solve some hard core problems that the child may actually have. Also, you're showing your kid that they should be judged by how they look rather than how they act and behave themselves.
Punishing your child by making them a target of bullying is doing nothing but repeat a vicious cycle where that kid's bullied victims become the bullied and it doesn't do jack shit to end bullying in society.
