Appearance: Nat's height and build give people the impression of an Amazon. Nat stands tall at a height of 5'11, much to her mother's dismay. Her mother's dreams of having an adorable, petite princess daughter to dress up and flaunt to her friends were dashed when Nat hit her growth spurt in middle school and…never really stopped growing. She filled out, too, growing into a curvy figure. Her body is strong and sturdy, muscled from playing field hockey since middle school, lending to an intimidating figure that has cast her image as a bully.
Her hair is cut short, falling right below her chin. It's the same strawberry blonde shade as her mother's. She tends to tie it up to keep it out of the way. She inherited her eyes from her father. They're a dark brown that she often compares to the color of Coke.
Nat strongly dislikes Adessi's uniforms as it reminds her too strongly of what her mother wants her to become. She will manipulate the uniform in every way possible much to the chagrin of her teachers. Her sleeves are often rolled up, the ribbons are tied loosely with her shirt left untucked. She favors skirts over pants, but she usually folds over the top of the skirt to make it shorter. Nat claims she does it because her height makes the skirt's conventional hemline hit her at an awkward place.
Accessorizing is her favorite aspect of fashion and her love for it shows regardless of whether she is in school or out. Studded and leather accessories usually cover her wrists and neck. She favors things with silver and things that come in black. Nat is nearly always seen with some piece of jewelry on whether it's a bracelet or a pair of earrings.
Suffice to say, Nat never appears properly dressed in the school's dress code, which often ends up with her getting scolded.
Outside of school, Nat dresses comfortably and casually. She loves bright (neon) colors, which balances out her taste in accessories. Nat usually wears brightly colored t-shirts with pants or skirts. She can even sometimes be seen wearing dresses except they never have the girly details her mother adores. A pair of neon sneakers is a staple of her daily wardrobe. She's fashionable, but not in the way that her mother hopes. She absolutely detests the overtly feminine style her mother tries to force on her, especially when her mother is buying her clothes several sizes too small for her body.
Personality:
Nat has a reputation for being an aggressive, short-tempered, violent thug ready to intimidate the weak and fragile out of their life savings. Rumor has it that she'll beat you up if you so much as step on her shadow. People think of her a ticking time bomb ready to blow. Some say that when she was a sophomore, she lost it and put a kid in the ICU. Nat Vogel is someone to be avoided.
In reality, Nat is a fairly reserved girl who doesn't turn to violence nearly as much as her reputation says. A simple conversation with her will reveal that she's a surprisingly laidback, responsible girl. She can be a difficult person to be around considering she can be bossy and unbearably stubborn, but she doesn't expect much from people. If she barges in and makes a demand, she doesn't necessarily expect it to be fulfilled. If the other person has a problem, they should speak up. If not, then there's no need to argue, right?
While she isn't a bloodthirsty bully, Nat isn't necessarily a nice person, a fact that she readily admits. People get on her nerves easily, she doesn't know how to say things nicely, and her sarcasm tends to have more bite to it than she intends. She's frank and, at times, aloof. She does have a malicious streak. If she feels wronged then she feels justified in getting revenge. An eye for an eye. Her relationship with her classmates have made her skeptical of the intentions of strangers making it especially difficult to be the one to befriend her.
Nat simply doesn't enjoy interacting with the majority of her peers. She thinks many of them are stuck-up with an entitlement problem. Her disinterest with socializing with her classmates is the main reason why her reputation as a bully remains. Most of her classmates fear her because of what they think she is, but she can't be bothered to change their perception of her. Nat, however, does tend to be friendly and open with people she considers to be genuine. If she thinks she'll like you, she'll be the first to try and strike up a conversation. The only problem is that most people think that she's out to get their lunch money and don't give her much of a chance.
She values independence above all else. Nat works part-time at a supermarket not because she has to, but because she doesn't want to depend on her family. She thinks that paying for her to attend Adessi is more than enough. Nat does tend to scorn people who she considers to be dependent on others and helpless. She can't stand people who can't or won't do things by themselves. It's a pathetic trait, in her opinion, and she'll respect you less for it. She will be the first to acknowledge her privilege and all of the opportunities her family has afforded her, but she strives to take as little as possible from them. Besides her school fees, her job keeps her financially independent.
For the most part, she's confident with a hardy self-esteem, calloused from years of being ostracized. She does have moments of insecurity, largely sprouting from her mother's issues with her body. She has learned to embrace her body, but there are occasional bouts of uncertainty. Nat also has a fearsome temper when angered. While she gets annoyed easily, it's usually difficult for annoyance to turn into anger. However, when the right buttons are pushed, the feared, rumored fists come out.
History: The Vogels live the American dream. They're a wealthy family based in a plushy suburban town a two hour drive from Abaton. Nat's father works as an executive for a booming while her mother stays at home, playing the role akin to a Stepford Wife. She has one older brother, Adrien, who excelled in school and left behind a steep legacy for her to follow at Adessi Hall.
Nat, as the only daughter, became a personal project of her mother's. Her mother had married into wealth and status through Nat's father, which left her obsessed with image and material wealth. She wanted to mold Nat into the shining image of the perfect girl. She wanted a charming, well-mannered, pretty daughter to flaunt at all of her socialite friends, to whom she was constantly trying to prove her place.
Horseback-riding and piano lessons occupied the majority of Nat's childhood. When she grew bored of the endless practicing and threw a fit, her mother enrolled her in etiquette and baking classes too. The Vogels were regulars at the local country club's social events and Nat was naturally expected to attend. It was at these elite parties that her disillusionment with her family and their way of life truly began. Seeing her parents put on a facade to goad the envy of their friends and talking with the silver spoon, privileged children wore on her nerves. Her mother simply exacerbated the situation by making Nat wearing disgustingly cute dresses and threatening her into acting the part of the sweet daughter.
It would have been tolerable if they hadn't been bimonthly events from fourth grade on.
In middle school, she hit the growth spurt that made her tower over her classmates. Her mother detested the fact that Nat was not growing up to be the Size 0 girl she was hoping for and loudly voiced her opinion. Nat was growing up to be tall, but not at all supermodel-stick thin. It wasn't unusual to come to dinner to find her portion size notably smaller than her family's or diet pills waiting with her morning juice.
Weary from her mother's attitude, Nat had little patience for the antics of her classmates. It was only the first month of her freshman year at Adessi and the transition to the new school was lonely at best. The infamous incident that started Nat's reputation as a bully happened during gym class. Nat had returned to the locker room prematurely after pulling a muscle. There were suspicious sounds in the locker room that Nat couldn't ignore. It turned out to be a trio of girls trying to break into a classmate's locker to slip in contraband serious enough for expulsion. Naive, and justifiably disgusted by her classmates' actions, she demanded for them to stop. Her demand to cease and desist devolved into a verbal argument, which quickly led her to slapping the ringleader of the group. That eventually turned into an outright fight, ending with Nat punching the girl in the face.
The girl ended up with a nasty blackeye and an assortment of other injuries, most of them exaggerated. The girl, with the support of her friends, concocted a story about how Nat had lost it ad taken her anger out on the closest victims-- them. Nat got into serious trouble despite trying to tell the truth and teetered on the verge of expulsion. Her father, not wanting to lose face, donated large sums of money to the school and paid off the girl's family to keep them from suing.
However, the money didn't stop the girl and her friends from spreading lies at school. They played up the victim card and labeled Nat a "dangerous beast" with random bursts of senseless violence. The proof of the girl's bruised face and the sway of her popular status had influence. Classmates avoided taking the seats next to Nat and cowered away whenever she walked by them. Her height and her build didn't help her much with her case. She looked scary. The first week after the incident, Nat did play the part out of spite. She snapped at people and purposefully acted more aggressive than usual, but never actually hurt anyone. Another fight like that and no amount of money would be able to keep her from getting expelled. She was angry at the injustice and it was the only way she knew how to deal with it. Nat has cooled off since then, but the damage had already been done. One thing from the beginning of her freshman year at Adessi has followed her, growing and mutating as stories get passed down to fresh faces at the school.
Nat's rebellious attitude isn't the only problem that the Vogels face. On the outside, they appear to be like any other happy American family (albeit with a problematic teenage daughter), but problems plague the Vogels. Her parents' relationship is on the rocks with her dad involved in an extramarital affair. Her brother, the seemingly perfect son, is struggling with depression and abusing study drugs in order to get through graduate school. On top of it all is her mother fighting to preserve the perfect image of the Vogels, but her spending habits are exceeding what her estranged husband can make.
As for Nat? She doesn't care. Well, she does, to a certain extent, but she thinks it's all deserved.
Other: Don't call her Natalie. Ever. Use Nat or Vogel. She also plays for the school's field hockey team
