Well well well, tonight, in keeping with other nights this week, I watched a few movies. Last night was Catch Me If You Can, 'cause I love that whole redemption thing, even though Leo's just redeemed in the eyes of the law, and Ed Wood, of course, 'cause you know I love those two tone horror flicks, especially the bad ones, of which Wood's the king (e.g. Plan 9 From Outer Space)
Tonight, though, was very "death" centered, or at least fear of it. For starters, I saw The Ring, which was VERY creepy. Great twist near the end, before which the movie was only good, and after which I'd call the flick very cool. That's my rating system. It goes from "pretty shitty" to "excellent", and there really isn't a system to speak of, but boy are there ever mounds of words in between them.
I think they really worked the movie well by not explaining it too much. The less you explain, the less there is for intellectuals to quibble with. Plus, I think there's a great part of fear that lies in not understanding. People, statistically, fear spiders more than they do death. Spiders are still an untamed force, foreign from our sphere of influence. Death happens to us all, and is not uncommon, although not as common as before the dawn of technology. Spiders are a classic metaphor for trechery, deceit, and maliciousness. That's why I love Charlottes Web. The spider is shown as motherly and caring, realigning your perspective on life. But I wander from the point.
