PHOENIX -- The D-backs selected the contract of outfielder Jeff Salazar from Triple-A Tucson to fill the roster spot left open by Orlando Hudson.
Hudson, who will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery on his left wrist on Saturday, was placed on the 15-day disabled list.
Salazar played in 58 games for the D-backs earlier this season, mainly as a pinch-hitter, going 20-for-99 (.202) with two homers and 10 RBIs.
With the Sidewinders, Salazar raked, going 36-for-99 (.364) with four homers, 18 RBIs and 29 runs scored in 24 games.
"Triple-A isn't quite as glamorous," Salazar said. "I felt like I worked hard to get here. Anytime someone tells you you've got to go down to work on something to earn your way back, it's difficult, but ... it was one of those things that needed to be done."
Salazar benefited from getting regular at-bats in Tucson. He had a rough time pinch-hitting this season.
"I got to play every day and get back in the routine of seeing a lot of live pitching and getting some regular at-bats," Salazar said. "That's what was the most important thing for me, I think."
The D-backs have been equipped with four outfielders since Eric Byrnes went on the disabled list. The addition of Salazar will give manager Bob Melvin the option of giving center fielder Chris Young a day off. Young has appeared in every game since April 21.
In another corresponding move, pitcher Edgar Gonzalez was transferred from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list. Gonzalez has missed the last 39 games with a right elbow strain.
