I've waited outside her house a million times. Not with dubious intentions, it's across the way from the N stop. "Miss Gloria: Psychic and Tarot Card Reader" one sign proudly proclaims. And then two more signs both stating "tarot card reader" in case you didn't get the point the first time. She's always looked at me, I know it's not my imagination. She watches tv in her living room with her shades slit just enough for her to see out and me to see in. She takes her eyes off the tv just enough to stare me down. I know it. I've been tempted to visit her before. She must somehow know this. Does she have something to tell me?
Tonight was different. Tonight the wind was strong and the rain unpleasant. Sideways almost. I had to face her house with my white hood pulled to the side to keep the rain out of my face. This positioning brought me face to face with her. Like always, she stared outside her window at me. Like always I got uncomfortable and looked away. But tonight, she gets up. She goes to the door and opens it. There is nothing between us. She opens her mouth to speak to me. I think to speak to me, I don't know, I won't ever. With the wind and rain in my ears and the roar of the finally arrived N train her voice was lost. I got on the train and she shut her door and sat back down with her television. Next spare ten dollars that comes my way, I'll promise like always to pay Miss Gloria a visit. I'll probably forget or chicken out. I always do.
