From what I understood about Prop 8 was that it was just defining marriage as a term versus changing what rights a person could have in a domestic partnership. (I could be wrong on this though.) So really it was fighting for the right to be defined as married. (Or the right to marry.)
My faith has changed through the years but I have come to accept that no matter what, love should be constant. If I were to have a son or daughter that was gay I would love and accept them as my own no more or less then a straight child.
My faith influences my opinions on marriage though, which is why I question when the term "marriage" should be applied. Should it be wholly a function of a religious institution or also part of the government? I more tend to think the former. Rather then asking if people should have the right to be married, I would more look at if the government has a right to define what marriage is. In a sense, the government is creating morality by defining marriage. Morality should be left for religious institutions.
The government should view all people, black people, white people, gay people, straight people, male or female (people) as the same. In this sense, it should be objective in the rights given to those people. Should a religious institution choose to discriminate against any people, that is up to them as a private organization outside the government to decide. The government cannot force morality or belief on any person. That may be what's most at stake with Prop 8.
